Purpose: To match the handwriting on the suicide note to one of the suspect's handwriting.
Procedure: Equipment/supplies needed includes the suicide note left at the crime scene and a sample of each of the suspect's handwriting. Compare the sample of each suspect's handwriting with the original piece of evidence. Note handwriting qualities including, cursive/print, dotted I's and crossed T's, line quality, spacing, as well as other factors.
Data: The handwriting on the evidence was large, spaced apart, messy, with bad line quality
Results/Conclusions: The handwriting on the suicide note is most similar to that of Aldo's handwriting. Possible sources of error include the handwriting being altered due to stress, writing utensil, or drugs/alcohol.

Purpose: To identify the unknown powder found at the crime with a powder that links the crime to a distinct location.
Procedure: Equipment/supplies needed include unknown powder, test tube, spot plate, water, sodium hydroxide, iodine, and vinegar. First mix the substance with water, if it is soluble it is Fructose, MgSO, or NaHCO3, from there mix it with sodium hydroxide. If there is a white precipitate it is MgSO4. If there is no precipitate it is either fructose or NaHCO3. Then mix it with vinegar, if there's bubbles it is NaHCO3 if there are no bubbles it is fructose. If you originally mix the substance with water and it is insoluble then it is CaCO3, CaSO4, or starch. From there mix it with iodine. If it turns deep blue it is starch and if it turns brownish then it is CaCO3 or CaSO4. From there mix it with vinegar. Bubbles mean its CaCO3 and no bubbles mean its CaSO4.
Data: When mixed with water the unknown powder was soluble, when mixed with sodium hydroxide it had no precipitate. Then we mixed the unknown powder with vinegar and there were bubbles meaning the powder is NaHCO3 (baking soda).
Results/Conclusions: Since the powder was identified as baking soda that linked it to 323 Maple Blvd., the Jones Family Bakery.

Zennia met Aldo at a bar and got to talking. They both realized they were in a bind for money. Zennia knew of a new bakery nearby that was doing well. She figured it be easy enough to break a lock, sneak in after hours, take some cash and head out without harming anyone. Aldo agreed to help (he could use the money and had enough experience that this would be an easy job).
So they next day the broke in late evening. Everything was going good, Aldo even had time to write a quick note which he thought added a nice flare to the crime. But, then he looked over and Zennia was putting her hair in a ponytail and taking off her coat.
"I'm hot!" She complained.
"I'll open a window." Aldo walked towards the back of the store where ingredients were stored. In the process he knocked over a large container of baking soda and red food coloring. "Shoot!"
Zennia yelled from the front of the store, "I hear sirens, we better get going here!"
They grabbed the cash and ran.

The next day forensics scientists and the CSI discovered a fingerprint on a windowsill which they matched to one in their system from Aldo Arravichi. They were also able to find a long brown hair, that when examined and DNA tested, matched with a women named Zennia Zapapta in their system. It was confirmed that the human hair belonged to her when a cat hair found at the scene (that fell off her sweatshirt during the crime) was matched to her cat, Pepper.

Authorities were glad that the red liquid found was just food coloring and nobody was seriously harmed during the burglary. After a long trial involving lot's of evidence pointing to the suspects, Zennia and Aldo were locked up. The Jones family was able to get their money back and celebrated with donuts.
