Pan's Labyrinth Analysis

In the opening scene of Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), both warm and cool tones coat the scene. The cool, blue colors reflect the state of terror and dismay of Ofelia, as she bleeds to death. The warmer, more magical, green tones are nowhere to be found while she lies awake in shock and horror. The discomfort of the scene is intensified with the camera’s angle slowly shifting from a vertical to a horizontal angle at 180 degrees. The slow rise of the camera showing Ofelia’s bloody hand and anguished face creates a tense atmosphere that suggests viewers are interrupting a story. The slow tilt into the natural 180-degree angle and zoom into her face allows the audience to sink into the atmosphere and get ready for the story of her circumstance to be told. As the movie jumps back to the days before that event, the world begins to take on a warm, golden color. The contrast between the cool and the warm temperatures is reflective of Ofelia’s own life, which is full of joy and wonder when she is alone completing magical quests for the faun and somber and dreadful when she is facing her reality as a victim of Captain Vidal’s terror. The movement of the camera following the part of the scene when they get out of the car reflects Ofelias feelings of detachment from her reality. The camera only follows her as she walks away, which gives the impression that she is putting her reality aside to enjoy the magic and beauty of the new environment. As she goes into the forest, the camera tilts up at the sky and looks around, almost as if we are looking at the world from Ofelias point of view, which contributes to the scene’s feeling of wonder and awe as viewers watch the transition from Ofelia’s reality to her imagination. Vidal’s men and her mother have now become a part of the background of the frame as Ofelia becomes preoccupied with the magic of the world around her.

Scott Pilgrim Transition Analysis

Edgar Wright creatively transitions from one shot to the next by using a combination of text, non-diegetic music, and diegetic sound from Scott. The bright light shining through the open door created the opportunity for a fade, beginning the transition. The otomatopeoia graphic, accompanied by the scream, added to the comic book-like aspect of the movie and helped make the transition more seamless and engaging. After the fade, the quick camera tilt from the sky to the library solidified the change in scenery and matched the fast pace of the rest of the movie. Wright could have simply used a crossfade to transition from one scene to the next, but instead chose to combine these elements to contribute to the overall style of the movie.
