In my project I have explored the term odyssey and what it means to me - after doing research I came to the idea of illustrating an odyssey story I always enjoy depicting a narrative - after delving into both the grimms fairy-tale books and the book Alice in wonderland I decided to further explore the story of Alice in wonderland I aimed to depict the darker side of the story ; the connotations the book has to mental illness and addiction. These themes have been explored before in both music ( Jefferson aeroplane white rabbit ) and in modern illustration ( Alice in Sunderland by Bryan talbot ) I particularly took interest in the “Drink Me “ scene in the book - I thought this quote would make an evocative piece of work and would fit with my aesthetic . I started the project with the plan to do a series of etchings alone however after some issues with etching press I used some time to make Lino as well - once the etching press was fixed my prints where printed and although I am happy with my etchings ; putting them next to my Lino’s did not sit right - in order to try an fix this issue and connect the Lino and etchings I incorporated both techniques in one print , which is something I have never done before but was really happy with the result . It added depth and texture to the paper that I can’t get alone with Lino . I also tried to keep the colour scheme of the work very united – Red seemed to fit the “pack of cards” metaphor that runs along the Novel and also was a bold and sinister colour that allowed me to link my work even though different techniques where used. The inking up of the etchings allowed me to create variety in tone- I used this to create a darker “ brooding” background for a lot of my etchings . I incorporated a variety of sizes: the aim of this was to reflect the disorientation of the book. I enjoyed etching on a large scale as you can include such a variety of marks and textures that possibly go unnoticed in my smaller etchings. I laid out all my final pieces and carefully selected the prints I felt worked the best together for the final show. I didn’t want to completely  separate the lino from the etchings as I felt this would look too disjointed. Overall I am really pleased with the final prints I particularly like the “drink me” side profile of Alice as there is tone in the hair and skin texture which is something I havnt explored in print but will definitely continue to explore. In hindsight working with one technique would have made for a better final exhibition but from this mistake I achieved a print that incorporated both techniques which I am happy with.
