When I think of the term writing workshop, I think of an isolated rectangular room. A sweatshop where students are forced to do hard work against their wills by hardcore drill instructors. However, that is not what I actually think about writing workshops themselves. The name association of writing workshop makes me think of a sweatshop. However, writing workshops themselves are more like sweet shops that provide great opportunities for students' writing skills to blossom, flourish, and grow bigger than the size of the giant bean stock that's from the Jack and The beanstock. Students can expand their horizons and treat themselves to ever diverse ideas.

Writing workshop wasn't a social or collaborative act when I was in school. Writing was private and the revision process was directly with the teacher either through conferencing or feedback on my paper.
When I was a teacher, the writing process and workshop changed. It became a collaborative and social act. I wanted my students to discuss their topics, generate ideas both individually and in groups for inspiration and to develop further ideas. My students worked with each other to provide meaning feedback and to boost confidence. Their work was shared and celebrated.

When I think of writing workshop, I think of students being able to write real world writing. They get to focus on pieces that are important to them and focus on an intentional audience. This personal connection with writing allows the writing to be enjoyable. Students get a chance to work through the writing process multiple times and are able to find the process that works well for them. I also think about how students learn how to discuss their writing with each other. There becomes a community of writers where they are able to get feedback from multiple writers in the room.

Writing workshop means carving time out for thinking and writing. It allows for a process to take place. Writing workshops are a time for discovery and drafting. They allow for the individual process of writing, but also for collaboration with peers and teachers. Writing workshops were not very common when I was in school. If we had a writing workshop, it was individual time that we spent writing and following up with the teacher on an assignment.

Lots of interaction between writers and their peers, as well as student and teacher. I think of sharing and publication, the importance of audience. And new methods of assessment that focus on process and product.

I've never seen a workshop in action, but I imagine a much more disorganized, noisy scene than students simply sitting at their desks writing quietly.

community-driven method of sharing and gaining exposure to writing. Improving your writing, very hands-on, and experimental. Perhaps trying a new writing exercise to help with brainstorming or creative ways to help you revise. Judgement free zone. Everyone there voluntarily with a similar goal.

A focus would be on the social part of writing to take advantage of the different perspectives that surround you

Analogy: wood shop in school. Working a particular project but utilizing the resources around you. You may be great using the jigsaw, but terrible at smoothing the wood. All of it is with the same goal in mind - shaping your wood into your project to the best it can be. A project that you're happy with.
