Advanced Therapy Treatment Centre ATTC Network

The ATTC project aims to develop robust systems for the routine delivery of ATMPs as a standard of care throughout the NHS in the United Kingdom.
There are a number of webinar presentations related to advanced therapy education ranging across different specialities which are free to access on the website.

Cancer Researchers Introductory Course- CRIC

The Cancer Researchers’ Introductory Course is an in house full day training course for all new staff working in the Cancer Division.
It is most beneficial for new and nearly new staff, ideally completed within the first 3 months of your new role.

The course covers:
- Key words and terminology routinely used in cancer research
- Understanding the biological basis of cancer and the link to the mechanism of action of treatments
- Exploring the common pathways for cancer patients from diagnosis and through the different treatment modalities
- Reviewing the current treatments and their adverse events
- Learning about the impact of a cancer diagnosis on a patient and their family and to consider survivorship.

There are 5 CRF's throughout LTHT collectively known as Leeds Clinical Research Facility- LCRF.

LCRF covers a wide range of disease specialities including oncology, haematology, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, neuroscience, oral and dental health and paediatrics.

The main CRF is located at St James's University Hospital with satellite units at Leeds General Infirmary- Adult and Paediatrics, Chapel Allerton Hospital and Leeds Dental Institute.

ILS Training

As core CRF staff working on early phase and advanced cell therapy clinical trials you need annual ILS training to maintain your clinical skills to identify and assess the deteriorating patient and act accordingly.
Your clinical educator will organise this training for you in house at the Resuscitation Education Centre SJUH.

The ILS course covers:
- Recognising and treating the deteriorating patient using the ABCDE approach
- Identifying the causes and exploring the prevention of cardiopulmonary arrest
- Opportunities to practice technical skills including quality CPR, defibrillation- manual and AED, and simple airway manoeuvres
- Discussion and utilisation of non technical skills to facilitate team leadership and membership during cardiopulmonary arrest

To qualify for ILS training you must be a registered member of staff Band 5 and above and have been qualified for >1 year.

Meet the team

My name is Charlotte and I am the Clinical Educator for LCRF.

I graduated from the University of Leeds in 2008 and began my nursing career at Leeds General Infirmary working in Interventional Cardiology.

During this time I developed an interest in clinical research and how it can improve patient outcomes and investigate cutting edge device technology and pharmacology.

I soon began working with the Interventional Cardiology research team on a wide ranging portfolio covering interventional, early phase, CTIMP and observational studies.

During my 11 years working in clinical research I supported and delivered a large number of high profile clinical trials working collaboratively with international sponsors and representing Leeds as a top performer in complex clinical trial delivery.

One of my main strengths was supporting and teaching new members of staff on research processes and delivery.

This passion for education led me to my current role as LCRF Clinical Educator.

I joined the Research Academy in October 2022 and support the LCRF workforce with their training and development needs.

I am committed to providing training for all which educates and empowers our staff to deliver complex and innovative clinical trials across a wide range of disease specialities at LCRF.

Simulation Training

Simulation training is a technique to recreate real world scenarios in a safe, artificial learning environment.

LCRF operates within the UKCRF Emergency Scenario Guidance where emergency scenario simulation training is a requirement for all staff working within the CRF.

We deliver emergency scenario simulation training at LCRF that is tailored to the clinical speciality and staff involved. This allows us to simulate clinically significant medical emergencies and test the protocols and pathways in place to treat and respond to the situation, such as emergency unblinding, infusion reactions, sepsis and acute escalation to high dependency level care.

This level of training ensures staff are competent and confident to deal with medical emergencies with the ultimate aim of increasing the safety of participants in clinical trials.
Through simulation, staff are able to practice critical thinking skills, patient assessment, decision making and effective team communication.

We follow a structured debriefing process which is guided by our learners and allows staff time to reflect and dissect the scenario to support a deeper level of learning and understanding.

Our emergency scenario simulation training programme is delivered in collaboration with the medical education team and resuscitation and outreach services.

Research Funding Opportunities

New funding opportunities are open for colleagues to submit applications. The Trust’s Research and Innovation department can support you from the initial stages of the conception of a research idea to obtaining funding. There are different funding bodies, research councils, organisations and charities that launch a variety of different funding calls to support different aspects of the research cycle.

Clinical Skills Refresher Training

Refresher training is intended for any practitioner who will soon use a clinical skill and:

· Previously attended the clinical skill session at LTHT and has been signed off as competent to practice but has not practiced a skill for 6-12 months or more.

· Previously attended the clinical skill session at a hospital trust other than LTHT and has been signed off as competent to practice.

We are looking for individuals who can act as a training an education link between the CRF Clinical Educator, Research Academy and the clinical CRF teams.
This would involve helping your educators to share and disseminate information with your CRF teams, and meeting quarterly to share education updates and discuss any training needs for your CRF.

Acute Oncology Passport Level 1

UKONS are really pleased to announce that the Level 1 Acute Oncology e-learning with competence passport is now live on the Macmillan learning hub. This online resource has been developed as part of the National AO Passport Project with UKONS and the UK Acute Oncology Society (UKAOS) together with the CASCADE research study team (Co-design of Acute oncology Standardised Competence Assessment Documents and their Evaluation).

The UK Acute Oncology Competence Assessment Passports aim to promote the development of a knowledgeable, skilled, and competent workforce that treats and cares for people with an acute oncology indication. The Passports cover four levels of Acute Oncology knowledge and skills competence, aligning with the UKONS Acute Oncology Knowledge and Skills Guidance. These levels are-:
