Ross Lovegrove.
Born on 1958 In Cardiff,Wales.Graduated from the Royal College of Art in London with a Masters Degree in Industrial Design
He is Inspired by the logic and beauty of nature his design possess a trinity between technology, materials science and intelligent organic form, creating what many industrial leaders see as the new aesthetic expression for the 21st Century.
The work that impressed me the most was his Ty Nant water bottle. Its doesn’t look complicated and yet it’s unique and gives off a special vibe,a vibe that makes the water bottle feel extra special as compared to others.
His challenges:He feels that the designers now are as quoted hijacking the meaning of design. Therefore he aim to be unique and bring out the actual meaning of designing a product while designing something.Hence he often needs to spend a significant amount of time making his product stand out and unique from the common designs.
I feel that designers are tasked to make the world a better place through their innovations. As a designer I would hope to help redesign things to make them simpler and more effective, efficient so as to better serve the customer and hence attract more customers.

And, what are your expectations from this elective?
Based on what I understand, product design is basically solving problems & creating products that meets a user's needs which helps improve the quality of life. The product has to be functional, able to get rid of inconvenience and be aesthetically pleasing at the same time.
My expectations from this elective is to improve my designing skills and my understanding of design. Hopefully I'll be able to create better designs in the future which will definitely be a great help to my course of study.
• What are your thoughts on the Utilitarian function, Emotional attitude, Cultural style and Belief / purpose as dimensions of Product Design?
I personally believe that the "Utilitarian function, Emotional attitude, Cultural style and Belief", works as a guide for designers to create a well designed product.

Reflecting on the various dimensions of product design, I have learnt that adding in the belief/ purpose part really does connect to the consumers in a deeper level. I have always prioritized the emotional attitude, followed by utilitarian function then cultural style while documenting my ideas. Being able to base products off a purpose or belief will help me in better presenting, elaborating and most importantly, relating with people out there with the same views as me. Therefore, I need to start incorporating all the 4 dimensions the next time I design an item as to successfully understand consumers out there while adding my own views and ideas in the product.

The importance of understanding Maslow Hierarchy of Needs in relation to Product Design is so that there will be a balanced proportion when addressing the needs of others; not too much physiologically nor on self-actualization. I will also know which aspects to prioritize more or lesser. Relating to the customers at a deeper level and addressing their needs based of it will allow me to improve my design as well as provide something that is useful while being affordable. In relation to my course- Interior Design, I will know to cater better to my clients and friends. Not only by translating their ideas or redesigning it myself, I am able to be initiative by asking about their needs more than just the normal "What's your dream home?" or "Which out of these do u like most?" Instead, while having the opportunity to do my work on a personal level with them, I can grab it to really understand them, do my best to help out; not just be good at my job or course but really becoming a better person. To love, to have empathy and to at the very least listen.

One product designer that I have chosen to research on is Marc Newson. Marc Newson is a well-known designer who have worked with many successful brands from manufacturing & technology, transportation, fashion, & luxury goods. Brands include Apple, Louis Vuitton, Nike, & many more.
He was born in Sydney, Australia in 1963. He then decided to work and live in various countries such as Paris, Tokyo & London to gain experience and acquire new skills after graduating from Sydney University in 1986 at the age of 23. Marc Newson opened his own company named after him, “Marc Newson Limited”, which gained success a few years later. This led to him being held senior positions at his clients’ companies, one of them being the “Creative Director of Qantas Airways.
One of his work that really inspires would be his design on a time piece named, “Horizon Watch”. The watch is very minimal in terms of design but the futuristic and luxurious look of it is very appealing. When we think about objects from the future, we would think of high-technology components and materials like metals. However, he used the traditional look of a watch which include mechanical gears, vintage materials like wood, and merged them with his design to give the product a fashionable look. The design is definitely something one of a kind and is ironic in a sense.
One of the challenges faced by Marc Newson would be taking the traditional & modern aspects and combining them to make the product.
This assignment has taught me that a product does not necessarily need a complex design to look aesthetically pleasing and to serve its purpose. Simplicity in design can also be considered when creating a product.
Designers are extremely important to create a good design in the modern world. People always seek ease and would buy products that would eliminate or lessen the amount of work.
Source of information: Ltd, M. (2019). Projects | Marc Newson Ltd. The Guangzhou Opera House showcases a very unique external shape and form which encompasses the principles of topography and geology by using unusual geometric 3D shapes. The sharpness and rigidness of the overall building structure blends and flows with the environment. But the feature that is the most striking to me is actually the interior design of the auditorium, the wave shaped foyer flows elegantly to the shape of the auditorium which makes it feel like it is one whole element and by which contrasts the sharp geometric exterior design.

The importance of designers and good design in the modern world today is abiding by the Maslow’s Hierarchy and conform to the user’s specific needs and wants. And in today’s era, efficiency and sustainability in design is important as resources are depleting and are limited, hence designers need to be capable of eliminating unnecessary elements or use better alternative materials to create their products without compromising on the basic functionality of the product.

Marc Newson
Marc Newson is born in Sydney Australia, 20 October 1963 and graduated from Sydney University in 1986. He is raised by his mother, uncle and grandfather. With the aid of an Australian Crafts Council grant staged his first solo exhibition at the age of 23. The exhibition featured his ‘Lockheed Lounge’, a riveted aluminium chaise longue, that has arguably become one of the most iconic contemporary design works. Some 30 years later, it has set four world record prices at auction for work created by a living designer. His design pieces remain highly sought after on the secondary market and by 2010 accounted for 24% of total auction sales in the category for Sotheby’s, Christie’s, and Phillips.
Marc is well known and his works span across manufacturing and technology to transportation, fashion, and the luxury goods sector. He has worked with many prestigious brands such as Apple, Louis Vuitton and Nike. Adding to it, he has been included in TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People and has received numerous awards and distinctions.
Marc's design philosophy is as stated in an interview:

"[I have] a desire to want to make things better and the desire to create things that have a sense of longevity, sense of quality – not designing landfill… if I can avoid it. I love the idea of designing something that as a consumer you can have one of for the rest of your life, and it will work forever. I don’t really like the idea of disposability." and his inspiration:
"I get inspiration from materials and processes and technology; in the world of design and in the creative world in general there’s a large emphasis placed on being new, being original. One of the ways I’ve identified of being original – it is very hard to be original, let’s face it, at the end of the day it’s not easy – but bringing one technology or processes from one industry into another is a good way of being original."

One thing that surprises me about his products is the focus and aim of creating 'the one' for his customers- high quality> emotional attachment> love and pass down. Adding this to his inspiration of passing down technologies and processes from one industry to another makes for not only a unique product but also a product that will last and satisfy a large group of consumers. For example, technologies from product design such as phones can be introduced to fashion design. It doesn't always have to be a new design or one that will attract everyone's attention but instead, the functionality, quality, longevity and minimalism is something that is enough to attract a group of customers that prioritizes quality over quantity. It inspires me to aim for the well-being of the earth, capture the consumer's heart and make something that is timeless.
Overall, i learnt that there are many perspectives and aims for different designers and it doesn't always have to be something new but instead one can simplify, beautify and just improve on the countless things out there. 'Good' design in today modern world is important as every designer is different, so more products, services and new/ improved items will be produced to meet demands and set trends. Not only will it be a never ending situation of creating something 'new', but designers play a huge role in helping others make and create, showcase their own personality and improve this world in terms of sustainability and connectivity.

Ltd, M.

1. Product Design in my opinion, is the creation of a product with a mix of creativity and efficiency. The product will not only be a unique and aesthetically pleasing product, but it will also provide customers the best experience. Hence, that is what I feel Product Design is. Being able to be efficient with the resources provided, to produce it into a unique and pleasing design.

Thus, I expect this elective to be able to propel my creativity, to be able to design an exemplary invention.

2. My thoughts on it is that by using Utilitarian function, Emotional attitude, Cultural style and Belief / purpose as dimensions of Product Design, we will be able to identify easily who our target audience are and also attract them to our product. These skills are key to being able to present your inventions to the public and by using certain Cultural styles and Beliefs, we will be able to efficiently attract our target customers. Hence, that is how we will be able to sell our designs to certain groups of people.

3. I feel that it is important to understand Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs in order to make the right unique product at the right time. For example, during exam seasons is when most students will want to buy certain types of stationeries for their studying needs. That is when we as Product Designers will design a unique, functional and eye-catching product that meets the needs of the students.

This nail clipper is an a good example of form follows function as the design enables the user to use it which ever way he is holding it thus being able to clip your nails comfortably even if the user is using his non dominant hand. The shape is really simple and flat to help with easy storage and for the user to be able to have a better grip on it as well to help cut their nails smoothly. This is effective as they are able to cut their fingernails no matter which hand they use as a normal nail clipper would make it hard for a user to use if his hand is positioned in other ways other than the conventional way it is held as the lever to clip the nail would be at the back of the clippers where as this is positioned in the middle for easy access.

Though the purpose of this object is just an artwork if it were to be used by people it would be very inconvenient, because lets say that the function of having two wine bowls is to share with another person, both parties wouldn't be able to drink at the same time as well as if both wine bowls were filled and if someone were to take a sip of from one the bowls wine would be spilling from the other bowl. Thus because of the function of this object is not very effective and shows a bad example of form following function.

One poorly designed product that I wish to talk about would be the Disney mickey mouse pencil. The shape of the product disrupts the function of the eraser. The eraser is attached to the end of the pencil and there isn't any possible way for the eraser to be detached from the pencil in order for the user to use it. Hence, the design is not useful.

The product that i think has a good design is this portable charger by the company IWALK. This to is a good example of beauty and proportion as in the 21st century we always have our portable charger out with us as we use our phones a lot and we often may forget to bring our cable with the portable charger. This makes it more convenient as the wire is attached to the portable and can be kept inside the portable without any wires peeking out. The design follows a few of Dieter Rams' 10 principles for good design as it is useful, understandable, goes through the last detail (they have three types of built in cable along with wireless charging) and it has little design as possible with only just the cables and the portable charger itself. The charger itself is also a good design of beauty and proportion as it is symmetrical and flat letting the users store it better.

The design has a plastic bag attached to the soles of the shoes and goes all the way up to the top covering the whole design of the shoe. When the shoes are worn, it isn't symmetrical in any way. Another reason why the design of the shoe is bad is because it isn't environmentally friendly. Plastic have been an issue that contributes a lot to climate change and global warming. The plastic design on the shoes have no purpose and therefore is unnecessary.

This chair is designed to fit into many different postures. The irregularity of the cushion and the base of the chair forms into a pack of french fries. The cushions of the chair can be adjusted to the user demands. The designer used proportion very well when designing as every cushion is identical and the line of symmetry can be seen easily. This enhance the appearance of the product.

This coffee cup is a bad example of beauty and proportion as there is no symmetry to the cup along with the user being unable to drink from the cup comfortably as the drink would spill everywhere from these different edges. It would also be uncomfortable to drink from it as there is no smooth edge long enough to rest your mouth and drink from it. The design also makes this cup difficult to store as the top is oddly shaped making it harder to find a space for it to rest nicely if your cardboard is already filled. This is also obtrusive as it does not serve its purpose as a cup because if a user were to drink from it, the drink would spill everywhere. The proportion of this cup is also off as the design cuts off halfway down the cup which creates monotony.

I also expect that the learning process be fun and blended nicely with hands on experiences and trips to understand more about the world of design.

For a product designer I believe the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs will be useful as it allows designers to understand the important needs of users and fulfill them. With this understanding they will be able to either target problems and needs faced by majority of people or by a specific group of people. This also helps product designer during their brainstorming and ideation to come up with more innovative ideas while still being on track with the target issue the product is solving, acting as a way to ensure that designers wont lose their direction.

“Failure is interesting -- it's part of making progress. You never learn from success, but you do learn from failure.”

My interpretation of this quote tells me that then designing a product making a mistake and not giving up is perfection.

James Dyson
is a British inventor, industrial designer and founder and chief executive of Dyson Ltd. Traditionally, he is best known as the inventor of the Dual Cyclone bag less vacuum cleaner, which works on the principle of cyclonic separation. According to the Sunday Times Rich List 2018, his net worth is $13.9 billion. He served as the Provost of the Royal College of Art from August 2011 to July 2017 and opened a new University on Dyson's Wiltshire Campus in September 2017

Famous product
Dyson vacuum cleaners

In the late 1970s, Dyson had the idea of using cyclonic separation to create a vacuum cleaner that would not lose suction as it picked up dirt. He became frustrated with his Hoover Junior's diminishing performance: the dust bag pores kept becoming clogged with dust thus reducing suction. Partly supported by his wife's salary as an art teacher, and after five years and about 5,127 prototypes, Dyson launched the "G-Force" cleaner in 1983 Dyson's breakthrough in the UK market came more than ten years after the initial idea, through a TV advertising campaign in which it was emphasized that, unlike most of its rivals, the Dyson vacuum did not require the continuing purchase of replacement bags. The Dyson Dual Cyclone became the fastest-selling vacuum cleaner ever made in the UK, and outsold those of some of the companies that rejected his idea, becoming one of the most popular brands in the UK.

Why I like this product

I like this product as the journey of designing the hairdryer is motivating and astonishing. With so much setbacks and failed prototypes and people doubting him he still managed to pull through and kept going resulting in success.

The sofa makes use of a steel shell which is then layered and sprayed, then lacquered. the shape of the sofa, which takes up the form, would let the user lie down in different positions, which is the function of the sofa.

BAD
Apple Puck Mouse from the iMac G3 from c.1998 is an example that form does not follow function.

no doubt that this has a nice circular, symmetric form. however, it does not early allow the users hand to experience it with ease. a human hand is more stretched out rather than a circle, so the design of this mouse should have been more oval, or even a rectangular shaped design. moreover, the curves on the sides are also through good form, but in combination of the circular form and the steep curve down would have the user feel uncomfortable, which makes their hand more numb and stiff. this was later changed in the design as it was a flaw for Apple when many users were filing complaints about wrist and muscle injuries.
