Elevator Speech Instructions

An elevator Speech is a clear, brief message or "commercial" about your library program. It communicates who you are, why you are valuable, and how you can benefit your stakeholders. It's typically about 30 seconds to 1 minute, the time it takes people to ride from the top to the bottom of a building in an elevator. Elevator speeches are handy to have rehearsed to advocate for school library programs in all kinds of situations: those planned and those unexpected.

This is a elevator speech that I wish I had handy at my summative evaluation before I went out on medical leave to have foot surgery last week. I was attempting to advocate for, at minimum, a discussion about financial support for the media center from the school budget. I fund everything for the media center with money I make from my book fairs, PTO, and grants. That includes Battle of the Books books (mandatory to have a team), digital programs I want to try in my makerspace or reading initiatives, books that need to be replaced due to being lost or damaged. Our library catalogue date is 2003, and this is at the lower end of other schools in my school district. I could also use a version of this to send when writing grants for money for books, as well.

I gave this pitch a couple of weeks ago, although it was presented in more natural language. The head of the english dept approached us about doing annotated bibliographies, and I saw it as my in to pitch this idea I had been thinking about for a while. It worked! We are currently working as a PLC on these lessons and embedding them throughout the semester. I hate 'corporate' speak, and find that I get good results when I pitch things to teachers who I have worked to form friendly and trusting relationships with.

This pitch came at a perfect time because our PTA just asked specials to make a list of items we need for special areas so they can allot some of the upcoming Boosterthon funds for us. Right now what I need the most is labels for all the genres I just organized in our fiction section and more bins to help create more dynamic shelving.
