In Italy, on December 26, just after Christmas, the day of San Esteban (Santo Stefano in Italian) is celebrated as the first Christian martyr. It is a national holiday since 1947, and closes the Christmas holidays. In family it is celebrated with a lunch (always in abundance) with typical dishes of each region. In some towns and cities, concerts and events are organized in the squares. Public offices and businesses are closed as are many stores.
