The abstract caught my attention in the very first sentence! It states that the pandemic will "create enormous disruptions for youth and families... for years to come." The phrase "years to come" really spoke to me. I was just discussing my own children with my husband. We decided to set some parenting goals to sort of "undo" the damage of the pandemic.

I made a note to email our guidance department and ask them what they have or will have in place to meet the emotional and mental health needs of our students returning and esp. returning from a place where they were trapped in abusive or violent or neglectful situations. I also think the tiers of adjustment will continue into next school year for sure.

I like the article and will reference it in discussions as students come back.

Alicia Mooney-Flynt

Also, I loved the survey idea because I have not surveyed my students to see why they are disengaged. I need to understand that they are dealing with the very human issues of life as I am. I could incorporate one on one conference times with students as well. I have not been doing it since we've gone remote.

This article brought up so many issues that I don't think are on any of my colleagues' minds to be honest. Our main concern is coming back and everything being business as usual while social distancing and maintaining proper Covid guidelines. The thing is is that I don't think that there are many schools in GCS that have been able to focus on MTSS and implement it successfully just yet. I know at my school we're definitely trying and we want it to work. The one word that stood out to me was "flexibility." We have to be flexible and provide low stakes requirements with longer timelines and various options for students to show what they know. Flexibility will be key.

The word "adjustment" stood out to me because that's all we've been doing for the past year - adjusting. I think the word "adjustment" is a positive term for the word "disruption" because as teachers we have learned to change unexpected hiccups into opportunities, whether it be for our students or ourselves. When we return to face-to-face instruction some adjustments that we will have to be mindful of include: incorporating more SEL, re-teaching routine, and learning to balance academics with health and safety.

I also kept coming back to the word "adjustment"-- and what struck me is how often we talk about an "adjustment period." It's not going to be automatic. As teachers it will likely take us weeks even to figure out the logistics of hybrid teaching. And then there's the emotional adjustment all of us will be making, teachers and students. Someone above mentioned colleagues who are thinking "business as usual" and that's not just an unrealistic scenario, it's setting us (and the kids!) up for a sense of failure and defeat. Maybe the corollary phrase "grace period" will be useful in thinking about adjustment: and being mindful of the fact we will all be adjusting to all kinds of things, all day long, some visible and some not. It would also probably good to talk about these adjustments, big and small, openly with students to help all of us process what's happening and improve the classroom experience.

I have tried to facilitate silent discussions with my kids since many are remote and a few are in person. I use an editable google doc to share with the class. I recently did this with an anticipation guide for Oedipus. They had to respond to my statement, and also a classmates statement. (leaving their name in parentheses so I know who said what). This gives them a chance to still communicate with one another even if they don't want to unmute! (Allison Kelley)

This is a project I do with my students to have them demonstrate their understanding of rhetorical skills and apply them to a possible future career context--advertising and marketing. We had a lot of fun with it, and it was great for students to see how many of the rhetorical skills they already had and figure out how to turn this into a profitable career. Next time around, we're talking about partnering with the CTE teachers to go more in depth in the marketing info.
