- A coach's plan should be flexible.
- You should develop and nourish ownership among participants. Make them feel as if the are in charge if the are reluctant to your help.
-Clarify responsibilities and relationships.
- Make sure that you know what is expected of you as a coach. You should work with your teachers and administrators to promote student achievement.
- Keep the coaches updated and connected. Meet weekly or biweekly to keep everyone updated on student progress.
- Know where to look. Build a collection of resources for other coaches and teachers.
- Create a common vocabulary. "A successful literacy coaching initiative requires teachers, coaches, administrators, and reading specialists to share a common language." (Sandvold and Baxter, 15)
- Assess progress. In order for a teacher to see growth, you must collect data. From that data, analyze the data to see the strengths and weaknesses of the teacher.

We need to remember that it is not all about strategies and curriculum, but teaching to the whole student. A literacy coach will face some resistance when trying to teach someone who feels that they know it all. Don't be afraid to teach them. Work with them to figure out what is best for them and the students. Your goal is to have students succeed.

1. Plan- The coach works with the grade level team of teachers to plan what strategy he or she would like to demonstrate or observe during a small group reading lesson. A lesson plan template can provide guidance for the teacher.
2. Teach/Videotape- If the coach is observing, teachers need to implement the lesson that was discussed with their students, preferably videotaping them at the same time. The coach will then reflect with the teacher at a later date to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the lesson.
3. Reflect- It is important to reflect on the lesson that was observed. Discuss the lesson at length so that the teacher can get an idea of what went on within the lesson. Give them strategies/techniques that they can use for future use in their lessons.
4. Share- The grade level team reconvenes and the teachers share their selected segments and writing reflections with their peers. Teachers must remember to not make evaluative comments.
