Hello!
through out the semester I was working on my manifesto and I was working on the importance of emotional design. I m still developing my manifesto constantly. the designs you see below are a close representation of my the way I would like to design, which is always linked to emotions.
as I was a kid, I suffered from scoliosis and used to wear a brace, I used to feel ashamed and wear multiple layers above it to try as much as possible to hide it. I try to recreate my medical corset into a sexy garment with it's utilitarian value. I chose to design a cape as an upper layer that covers everything and a complementary hood to the shape of corset.

in my manifesto, my take on sustainability is to create a garment that ages well with the choice of material. It leaves traces behind it and create a certain emotional connection with the user which won't throw it away easily :)
the idea is still to be developed.

so exited for the workshop!

Hello!!
In Spring 2021 semester we had to work on two fabrics Denim and Jersey and to study their history. Thus, this led me to the relation between the lines and curves presented in the fabrics to the well-known Art Deco. I got inspired from the Art Deco movement which represents a style that is sleek, linear, and geometric. I tried to show the features of Art Deco style through my garments with a “streamlined” look. Moreover, in order to make denim and jersey stiff and give it this structural feel I did some fabric manipulation and experimented with gluing Denim and Jersey. The fabrics then became just like paper as shown in the below images.

Looking forward for the workshop! :)

Hi,
For the Spring 2021 and in my Fashion design II course, we looked through the history of denim and jersey. What actually interested me through the history of denim and jersey, was the mass production and the over consumption of denim specifically . And after a great amount of research, I wanted to address the process of upcycling. I created flyers and shared the news on different media sources. I ended up with around 30 pairs of old, small, large... pairs of jeans.

This clearly depicts how much waste comes out of our garments that actually have a chance to be revived.
With one pair of jeans I was able to create a Romper.

And with the other 2 white pairs I was able to create the dress.

Hello, Nagham El Khoury here, and this is the closest worked project i have in relation to sustainablility. To keep it short and simple these series of THRIFTED flannel shirts were UPCYCLED into a bizarre looking dress. Now this is just the draped version of what it would look like, executed, as experimentation but I have not taken that path afterall. Upon hypothetical execution, this dress was meant to serve a variety of finishings to be worn in through the inner workings and through pattermaking and sewing skills we have acquired so far, such as several arm holes for different results. This garment advocates to sustainablilty by extending the market life of 3 pieces and refurbishing its target audience. I would hope my future designs are extensively more sustainable than my current and I am willing to learn about all the nooks and crannies on how to get there.

During the first semester of fashion which was last fall, my project was all about sustainability and had a story behind it which is : that a fishermen while performing his fishing task, most of the times catches and encounters plenty of litter daily in the ocean, so my idea was basically that these trash that the fisherman finds can turn to be something interesting, and why not make garments for them with them? So what I did was got some nylon and plastic bags and plenty of other food wrappings and some aluminium foils and ironed them on PVC fabric and waterproof fabric and created this interesting piece. I also hand knitted a styling piece which was the shown hat also using the same materials. In addition to the hand bag also made by pvc and the other mentioned materials!
I really enjoy ornamenting but through sustainability always !

The leather is madeup of cactus which is an organic material that after harvesing it, it regenerates quickly. not to mention that the amount of cactus used does not affect the amount of cactus cultivated where only 3 leaves of cactus are used to create 1 whole meter of cactus leathe and the regrowth of these leaves does not take more than 5 to 6 months.
thus using cactus leather is considered to be sustainable since it helps in maintaining the animal biodiversity and saving the animals that are being killed to manufacture leather goods

Not only this , using the cactus vegan leather would contribute in different aspects of sustainibility since it is an organic material that would biodegrade if later it was disposed into nature and i would love if my designs could have a positive impact on nature and sustainability in a way or anoher.

Material Choice:

SUZANNE LEE’s garment – which uses these growing textiles – is the ‘biocouture’ jacket made from cellulose. Instead of coming from plants, the cellulose is produced by millions of tiny bacteria grown in bathtubs of sweet green tea

"The cradle to grave concept looks at something we use and considers every step of production and disposal; mining or farming raw materials, the processes used to convert raw materials into something that can be used, transportation costs, carbon footprint and the ease of disposal. Looking at the entire life cycle of a substance gives us a complete picture of its sustainability, disposability and total environmental impact.

For the textiles industry, this is illuminating. Cotton is a natural product but it uses vast amounts of water to grow and process it. So although it is a natural product its use has a huge negative impact on our environment. Man-made, synthetic fabrics like polyester, come from fossil fuels and are one of the biggest sources of microplastic pollution. Their manufacture and the fact they don’t degrade mean their environmental impact is significant and negative.

These facts are what is driving the biocouture movement. What if we could grow our fabrics in a small vat rather than use vast fields for cotton or mine petrochemicals? What if there was virtually no processing needed at all – no bleaching, chemical processes or washing? What if they could be produced where they are needed without being transported halfway across the globe? What if after we had finished with the clothes we could simply compost them into 100% non-toxic organic matter we can simply add to our veg patch?"

From: https://www.thegirl.co.uk/what-is-biocouture/

Growing up I would always say "I want to study Biology in University and pursue a career related to Biology." However, look where I am now majoring Fashion Design; thus, discovering BioCouture was very intriguing as it is an experiment that is related to Biology. Finding such an innovation really inspired me to experiment with it in my future designs. As it is not only very light and sensitive to the eye but also sustainable and biodegradable.

I believe in creating a service, because if you want to incite change and reach higher audience, we should create a service where the customer is as interactive with the surroundings as possible. Not to mention, the inclusivity and the non-bias treatment of the user. So by that service, we could engage in exchanging pieces with one another. (just like this modular designed). Different garment composition (sleeve, collar, buttoning tab, half front, half back...) where the users will be able to mix and match and play around with the garment as a puzzle piece . As for the picture, it is a reference of how the service would be, as if I'm sharing part of my self with others, just like these half-heart necklaces.

I have these scarves hanging around for many years. I barely wear them, I just find them interesting and how there is a clash in texture, prints, sizes and colors. So it would be interesting if I could experiment in combining these textures into one piece. Since I already explored in denim items, under a main title "minimalism". So I think it would be interesting to get into a world of a variety of textiles. It would also be interesting if the zero waste is applied as a technique. Because while upcycling the denim items I had to remove some of the fabric.
