For example, jackrabbits developed long ears and insects have impermeable body coverings that can act as a protective shell against predators.
The Merriam's kangaroo rat has developed special nasal passages and kidneys that reduce water loss from the body. You can imagine how important this is when you live in such a hot and dry place.
Spadefoot toads adapted their behavior and escape the harshest desert conditions by living underground, in a state of dormancy during most of the year. When heavy rains arrive, they come to the surface to feed and reproduce quickly before the water disappears again.
