My personal journey as a writer comes with many outlets. I have written for both public and personal purposes. I like to write in many spaces. Personally, I write lists. These lists can be written privately and publicly. They are just sort of written as I think. I write love notes to my husband. These are public with an intended audience. They are written on post-it notes and are quick. I journal. These are written privately and to get my emotions out. I have to be on my own in order to create this writing. I love writing in public places with a lot of people around to analyze people. I enjoy observing people.

Professionally, I feel like I spend more time writing than anything else. I write IEPs and Lesson Plans. These have a specific audience. These get written based on time, rather than place. I write To-Do lists. I write papers upon papers for various classes. I try to write as much feedback to my students as I can. This type of writing can all be done publicly. It is also done based on time, rather than place.

In my Inclusion English classes, students begin every day by writing. They are prompted based off of the attached Powerpoint. Then, they have 5 minutes to write, 3 minutes to edit (based off of their FCAs), and 1 minute to share in their pods. Each pod has 3-4 students. Students generally share with the safety of knowing that the teacher won't always read their assignments.

Students write independently at the end of every class. While they are writing independently, they do sit in groups of 2-4. If they need assistance with the assignment, they discuss with their peers. They are given "sentence starters" that allow them to think critically about their time in class. Here is one example of sentence starters.

In the English Writing Community, the students respond based off of their prior knowledge. Our school is full of many cultures. They bring their own experiences to the class and they write about it freely.

In the Read 180 Writing Community, the students see writing as more of a chore. There are many groans when I tell them that it is time to write.

The class readings have influenced the way I respond to student writing time. If students seem like they are "spacing out," I try to give them time to collect their thoughts prior to redirection. In the Read 180 community, I am working on making it more social. Each student works independently, but I like for them to share their writings and readings. I look for the students to help one another improve.

At school, I write in two separate rooms: the teacher workroom and my classroom. The teacher workroom has a steady of flow of teachers at any given time. It has the copier, a table, and many chairs. It is a bit cramped. At my desk, it is in the front of the classroom so that I can monitor my students while they work. I have a view of the door, student desks, and my class library.
