The breakdown of the cost here reflects the high cost that can be required for preservation projects. Historic preservation, especially on the scale that is seen in Jonesborough, is an investment. Historic preservation became linked to a rebranding of Jonesborough and a tourism economy that relied in turn on historic preservation.

Historic preservation projects can be expensive, and often rely on some degree of grant funding. Organizations such as the Civic Trust work with various local and state agencies for project funding, and receive private donations from interested parties and individuals. Grants from state and national agencies help round out any extra funding necessary for historic preservation projects. One of the most important steps in receiving a grant is the grant-writing process. That is largely an electronic process in 2020, but that was not the case fifty years ago.

Scroll right to see an example of a grant application used in the historic preservation process.
