I think its really sad that children are taught to value lighter skin and societies focus is on physical features rather than the person on the inside. Kids shouldn't be raised seeing a difference in skin color and having very specific rules on what is allowed to be called beautiful. I think it's surprising that darker skin women don't get more praise because they are just as beautiful as any other color of skin. I disagree that lighter skin should be something that people want to have, because every living person looks different no matter how genetically similar they are.

In modern day racism and colorism is still a huge dividing factor in society. All the time i see people on social media praising black people who are lighter skinned than those who have darker skin. I see a lot of boys saying that they wouldn't associate themselves with darker skinned women, and degrading their value. Which is surprising to see because a lot of the kids i've seen say this have mothers who are darker skinned.

the way race plays in ones identity is because as it says in the article " dark skinned-relatives, who where quarantined in field labour, while the light skinned slaves were promoted to house slaves." which does put the role on to who did what and obviously in the time the whites were more powerful which created the un equality in race. it is different now though compared to the time in the novel a lot more people are open to accepting one another for who we are, their is some racial slurs in the world because racism will never go away but they are much more respected and appreciated in this time.

In chapter 16 Mrs.Turner talks about not liking black people and not being associated with that race even though she is mixed with black and white parents. Mrs.Turner and janie are both mixed and that is why Mrs.turner wants to be friends with her, because she is similar in skin color but janie considers herself black unlike Mrs.Turner
