The following words used to illustrate with examples the tendencies have been chosen mostly due to the lexical field that text d has.

Monosyllabic words

Since these content words have just one syllable, they have a full vowel sound without stress. One example of monosyllabic content words that we found in the text is "crime" /ˈkraɪm/ and its vowel sound is the diphthong /aɪ/.

Bisyllabic Words

Bisyllabic words have two syllables, the stress depends on the type of word. If it is a bisyllabic verb it tends to be stressed in the second syllable. In the text we can see the example concern whose weak syllable has a schwa /ə/ while its strongest has a long vowel /3:/.

Bisyllabic nouns, adjectives and adverbs, on the other hand, tend to be stressed in the first syllable. In the text, we can find the example woman (noun), its strongest syllable has a short u /ʊ/ while its weakest has a schwa /ə/. However, in the text, we have a noun which does not follow the tendency of bisyllabic nouns: intent. This word is stressed in the second syllable while the first syllable is reduced to a short i /I/. Finally, we have the adjective sexual, this adjective follows the tendency since its strongest syllable is the first one while the second one is reduced to a diphthong /ʊə/.

Polysyllabic Words

Words with three or more syllables are called polysyllabic words. To pronounce them correctly, it's important to identify which syllable is stressed. There are three different tendencies:

PATTERN 1: first syllable is stressed

PATTERN 2: second syllable is stressed

PATTERN 3: third or fourth syllable is stressed

When the word has four syllables, and the main stress is in the third one, we need to add a secondary stress on the first one, since words in English never start with two unstressed syllables. If the main stress is in the fourth one, we have to add the secondary stress in the second one. The secondary stress is not as accentuated as the main one, but its sound is not reduced.

Another point to consider is the fact that negative prefixes are always stressed.

This is a polysyllabic word whose stress is in the second syllable (pattern 2). In the stressed syllable there is a /ɪ/, while the first and third syllables are pronounced with a schwa sound /ə/.

Necessarily: /,nesə'serəli/

This is a polysyllabic word and it is stressed on the third syllable, but it also has a secondary stress in the first syllable.

If the word has affixes, we have to consider them separately. Generally, the primary stress falls on the main root word and the secondary stress in the prefix, as we can see in unintelligible /ˌʌnɪnˈtelədʒəbəl/
