Anti-microbial resistance is tomorrow's killer and a topic that needs to be discussed and researched today so we can better prepare for the future. Antimicrobial resistance is the phenomenon in which microbes develop mutations or genes that can resist the effects of antimicrobial treatment. This phenomenon is especially important in the context of public and global health in which previously thought-to-be effective drugs/vaccines may become outdated and need significant changes for future disease prevention/eradication.

This image depicts antibiotic/antimicrobial resistance on a global level, particularly in children, who are one of the world's most vulnerable populations. Such resistances are especially dire in low-resource countries in which a variety of drugs may not be as available for disease prevention/treatment.

This article describes the importance of maintaining an accurate and accessible surveillance system of global antimicrobial resistance occurrences. It is with this type of information that allows us to "help determine the cause of anti-microbial resistance and how it spreads" (Felmingham 2002).

microbial resistance and how it spreads.

This image showcases the growing resistance that E. Coli is developing against our usual antibiotics of treatment. This type of data is especially important for lower-resource countries who may not have access to a variety of drugs, allowing for the disease to continually mutate and grow.

This image showcases the many different pathways that antibiotic resistance can grow and spread. As seen above, bacteria can live on the surfaces of people, farms, animals, and healthcare facilities. It also doesnt help that in today's pandemic world, we are using a lot more disinfecting materials which only exacerbates this growing issue.

Environmental factors influencing the development and spread of antibiotic resistance

This article introduces the idea on how the main means of spread and tramission of bacteria isnt only by humans but also the surrounding environment. Environmental systems like sewage, wastewater, and air particles can easily cause the spread of bacteria, allowing it to further mutate and spread its resistances. "Understanding dispersal barriers is not only key to evaluate risks, but also to prevent resistant pathogens, as well as novel resistance genes, from reaching humans" (Palme et. al 2017).
