Puritans

The puritans were a movement for religious reform in the church. They were radical religous zealots who wanted a pure religion with complete devotion. The puritans believe in a few core beliefs: some of these being total depravity, predestination, limited atonement, theocracy, a city upon a hill, and religious education. They had a concept of how one should act in order to ascend to heaven; so in order to reach this point they put on a facade until it became true. These puritans were so radical that they were eventually persecuted in Europe and sent to the New World.

The puritans saw the exile as a fresh start. In the New World, they thought that they'd be able to make the perfect society, or the city upon the hill. However, when the puritans reached the Americas, they found hardships waiting for them with one of the coldest winters on record. When the puritans settled in, they made their do-good society blaming anything that is slightly bad on the devil. As their community advanced, foreign influence grew and slaves came from places with cultish religions.

In this puritan do-gooder society, teenagers did not have much available to them in order to stimulate their young mind and hormones. Because of this a few teenage girls, in Salem used their maid for entertainment. She was one of those who brought foreign influences into the house. This maid showed these girls tricks and "magic" which would be considered the Devil's work in their society. Even so, the girls follow this maid and ended up being caught and found in a crazed state. When they were going to be called witches, they tried to save themselves and say it was not their doing but other witches trying to convert them. They then proceeded to giving names of the "real witches"

Witch Trials

In these witch trials, they were not at all fair. The interrogators would not take no for an answer and would only stop torturing the accused once they admitted that they were indeed a witch. To make matters even worse, all someone needed to do in order to report someone for witchcraft was file a complaint and they'd be taken away. There was no just law in these courtrooms. This led to a very simple way of solving land disputes. If you were arguing with your neighbor over land, all you needed to do was report them for witchcraft and their farm was yours.

Witch Hunt

A witch hunt by definition is a campaign directed against a person or group holding unorthodox or unpopular views. There were more witch hunts which have taken place other than in Salem. Later in American History, during the Cold War, there was another witch hunt directed at communists within the walls of the United States. If one was called a communist, their life was over: no one would hire them, no one would associate with them, their family might even leave them. Many famous people were accused of being a communist and in order to not be labeled as such, they had to give up anyone they thought was a communist. There was one man, Arthur Miller, who stood up for himself calling this entire ordeal unjust and un=American. He then wrote a play about the Salem witch hunt to show the parallels between then and the Cold War Era.
