Opportunities

How do we help students understand that other points of view “can also be right”?

By exploring differing perspectives in the delivery of our lessons. I have started to use De Bono’s thinking hats in my Business lessons when discussing various contemporary issues, thereby forcing students to consider different points of view.

How do local contexts and global contexts impact how we communicate?

We need to be sensitive to the differences in culture and of course religion when communicating with a global audience. When I worked in Jordan, you were advised very strongly not to discuss the Israeli/Palestinian conflict at all in class. The Dutch psychologist Hofstede did some research on behalf of IBM back in the 70’s/80’s which looked at the cultural differences of people from different countries. When you look at these you realise that there are massive differences in values and cultures which would impact on the effectiveness of the communication of any global mission statement

Justin
