Benzodiazepines had a selective effect on anxiety instead of generalized tranquilizing effect. 

After a decade or so of the drugs popularity it was realized that long lasting benzodiazepines were not all they were cracked up to be. With a long half-life varying from 8 hrs to 4+ days these long acting drugs were prone to building up in a persons system.

The risk of overdose with bezodiazepines is far less than that of barbiturates because with effects of  benzodiazepines are not felt in the CNS. Therefore, the respiratory system is not depressed and will require a FAR greater dose to put the user into coma or make them stop breathing.
