Benzodiazepines were introduced in the 1960s in short or long acting form and were praised for their new take on treating anxiety. Benzodiazepines had a selective effect on anxiety instead of generalized tranquilizing effect.

After a decade or so of the drugs popularity it was realized that long lasting benzodiazepines were not all they were cracked up to be. With a long half-life varying from 8 hrs to 4+ days these long acting drugs were prone to building up in a persons system.

The half-life is prolonged in elderly individuals and in some cases will lead to dementia-like effects and in some cases can be interpreted as early onset Alzheimers.

The slow onset of the benzodiazepine's effect prevents the typical rush that works to create dependency and habit in users and the shorter half-life ensures that the drug wears off far before waking hours and prevent the build-up of the drug in the user.

The risk of overdose with bezodiazepines is far less than that of barbiturates because with effects of benzodiazepines are not felt in the CNS. Therefore, the respiratory system is not depressed and will require a FAR greater dose to put the user into coma or make them stop breathing.

NOTE: Benzodiazepines are synergistic with alcohol meaning if taken with alcohol the lethal dose is decreased.
