1.) Pick an aspect of media literacy that you would like to teach. Write it down on a paper. Be specific.
2.) With this in mind pick an artwork that you think could teach this specific content.
3.) Post a photo on padlet and write down:
What aspect of media literacy you want to teach?
How you think this work to teach this aspect of media literacy?

I know some people mean well, but some people mostly from rich Western countries travel to poorer countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America to pretend volunteer, make themselves feel better, and to post photos on Instagram to get likes. Most go to teach English and they are not even qualified to teach. 🙄🙄🙄 The last thing people from the Global South need is an inflow of unskilled labour. As voluntourism needs a lot of money, some locals even go as far as to create fake orphanages just for the sake of serving these tourists.

I think one form of art that can teach this is a “What I Wore” exhibit. These exhibits will evoke a lot of emotion, and I hope those emotions include empathy and compassion. These exhibits humanize the people. They aren’t just interviews; they aren’t just another story for the paper; they are real people that have already been harmed. It is important to be considerate in the way you tell that story in order to avoid extra harm.

The piece will be a participatory performance work where participants will spend the course of a weekend (Friday night through Sunday afternoon) living, eating, sleeping, and talking in a common space. In the center of a space will be a large, smooth piece of limestone with simple tools to carve words into the stone. Participants may speak about anything they like, but if they want to speak about something of which they cannot personally attest to the veracity, they must first carve a statement describing the thing into the limestone. The media literacy focus here is twofold. First, participants will have to consider whether what they want to speak about is worth the work, which has implications for social media use after the weekend. If you would not take the time to carve it into stone, is it truly worth sharing on social media? Or is it simply more noise? Second, participants will spend time during the carving to subconsciously reflect on whether what they are sharing is realistic, which will encourage further research before commencing the carving process. By slowing down the information sharing process, the negative effects caused by the rapid nature of social media will be forcibly mitigated for the duration of the experience, and hopefully for some time afterwards.

An aspect of media literacy that I would like to address is that the root cause of misinformation is the increasing polarization that is going on in most countries. We are often so divided by politics and that feeds into our confirmation bias and increases the likelihood of people spreading misinformation in order to prove their political points of views. What artwork first came to mind was Nam June Paik’s Electronic Superhighway: Continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii. Paik intended this artwork to suggest the highways although they still connect us, each state still has their own unique characteristics. I thought this would be a great artwork to show the opposite; despite the unique identities and polarizing media constantly being displayed to us in a way that appeals to that certain audience, we are still all interconnected in a way that we all want what’s best for us. We are all still human and we need to recognize the extent to which the media aggregates polarization even within the same states. Not only does this artwork showcase all the media that constantly surrounds us, but we see the same colors in the highways reappearing all throughout the U.S. map.
