From my observations, my MT has assessed that the students have learned the Success Criteria of the lesson in more than one way. I think it is important to assess Success Criteria in a variety of ways. I've seen her facilitate open class discussions about a topic, and noting student responses. I've also seen her actively monitoring and observing herself, to listen to student-generated discussion or action. I've seen her note handed-in work, and presentations as well. This multi-faceted approach allows for all students the opportunity to be successful

-Vincent

My MT is constantly observing the participation that the students have in the class. For example, if the success criteria of a lesson is to learn a certain note or articulation on their instrument, my MT has the student play individually or with their group to ensure that they are understanding the concept. If not, he usually spends some time working with them individually (or asks me to do it) while the rest of the class practices or continues with the rehearsal.

In my practicum, I have seen my MT have whole-class and small-group discussions about readings and lessons. She and I listen to responses and additions to the conversation, and/or we walk around to all of the small groups and listen in. She also provides multiple methods of assessment, such as small assignments for completion, rather than heavily graded assignments. These completion assignments allow students to engage with material and give opinions without worrying about the stress of grades, so long as they submit it. She also gives opportunities for students to come up with questions about the readings and ask each other, which demonstrates their reading and comprehension abilities.

-Georgea

The majority of the lesson consists of students collaboratively working on whiteboards, so my MT will walk around the classroom to observe student work and discussions. Additionally, when we consolidate the lesson, she gives students the opportunity to share what they learned and any questions they may still have.

-Tylar

Taking into account my experience in the classroom with my MT, she always utilises class discussion as a means of communication. Therefore, with the example of understanding the students’ sense of success criteria for a certain lesson or unit, she usually asks them questions. This includes their feelings towards the subject matter, if they need more time with the concepts, or even if they need assistance with certain concepts. Overall, she allows the students the opportunity to share where they are at with the material, so she knows where each student is at in terms of success criteria. -Christina

My MT assesses what the students know at many points during the lesson and the semester. For individual lessons, he does this by asking his students to demonstrating a specific skill on their instruments (it's a music class) that they learned that day or have been learning over the previous few classes. He schedules playing assessments at intervals throughout the term to check for the development of specific skills. For theory concepts, he has his students fill out theory worksheets and return them to him, not for a grade but to check that everyone understands the concepts.

I have seen my MT discuss success criteria with her students by allowing them to express understanding in more ways than juts physical evaluation. By having discussions about their projects, grades, and attitudes throughout the term, students are able to contribute to their learning goals and express their learning overtime. A key phrase she lives by is " learning is never over", so finalizing learning through a grade is not reflective of their progression.

-Erin

When doing note-taking class, she observes the level of participation and whether the students are paying attention to what she is saying and diligently taking notes of what she has written on the board. When doing a practical lesson, she checks to see if the students have been following her instructions and monitors them to see whether they are using their time effectively to practise and improve their skills.

-Blair

Evaluating Success Criteria and Assessment Strategies

In my practicum Ms. Hart employs a multifaceted and continuous assessment strategy to gauge student understanding of lesson success criteria, moving beyond traditional testing to incorporate a range of interactive and reflective practices. Her approach is characterized by ongoing observation and engagement, including daily discussions and conversations that allow her to directly assess student comprehension and identify areas needing further support. Beyond these informal checks, she integrates formal text assessments and collaborative projects, providing a comprehensive view of student learning. However, the most compelling aspect of her assessment methodology is the student-led conference, a powerful tool for fostering metacognition and self-assessment. During these conferences, students take ownership of their learning by presenting their progress, identifying their strengths and weaknesses, and articulating their strategies for future development to both their teacher and parents/guardians. This reflective process not only demonstrates the students' ability to understand and articulate their learning but also empowers them to actively participate in shaping their educational journey, aligning with a holistic and student-centered approach to assessment.
