1.There can be few stories of survival stranger and more terrifying than that of Jan Little. Jan was born and brought up in rural California. As a child, she suffered from poor vision and hearing. In 1952, when she was 21, she went to San Francisco. After a few years and with anunsuccessful marriage behind her, she decided to give up city life and become a farmer. 

 

2. With her three-year-old daughter, Rebecca,she went to Mexico, where she met and married an American called Harry Little. He was a strong-willed and charismatic character who came to dominate Jan. After 15 years as homesteaders, they finally moved to the jungle on the border between Brazil and Venezuela. With very little money, they started a farm on a hill overlooking a river. Their nearest neighbours were a five-day canoe trip away.They built huts and cleared land in the jungle and started growing crops. There were many hardships and Jan gradually became blind. Rebecca was fit and strong and could do the work of a man.

 

3. Life was hard but they managed to survive. They continued like this until 30th December 1979 when disaster struck. The family went down with an awful disease which resembled malaria. Jan couldn't move from her bed and was terribly weak. Cruelly, it was her daughter, Rebecca, who was the first to die. Jan was not able to walk so she had to crawl out of the hut to drag Rebecca's body away. For days Jan and Harry stayed in their hut too weak to do anything. They lived off a little flour mixed  with water and a few tins of food. Harry was completely helpless.

 

4. They became dangerously short of water so Jan had to make her way down the steep path to the river with a bucket. Somehow, she managed to get back to the hut with a little water left. By this time, they had almost run out of supplies and Jan realized that survival depended on her being able to reach the store hut, which was situated at the top of the hill. 

 

5. Over several days, by carefully using rope and pieces of cloth so that she could mark her trail, she gradually made her way towards the hill-top hut. She was terrified of the snakes and the wild animals which surrounded her so she carried a stick in case she met any.

 

6. Finally, six weeks after Rebecca's death, Harry died leaving Jan on her own with only the company of her pet monkey, Maggie. The poor woman even lost her hearing-aid. Even when the situation looked hopeless, Jan's refusal to give up meant she lived. She succeeded in reaching the store hut where she found matches. This allowed her to prepare her first hot food for months. Her pet monkey disappeared, depriving her of the companionship of another living creature. Yet the will to survive did not desert her. By now, almost completely deaf and blind, she chopped wood, made fires and successfully moved up and down the dangerous paths in order to get water and other supplies. 

 

7. On the last day of May, four and a half months after her daughter's death, she felt a hand on her shoulder. Help had arrived.

When Polish explorer Krzysztof Starnawski was eighteen years old, he went on a diving course and tried to dive, but couldn’t because he had problems with pressure in his ears. A few years later, he decided to take up a new challenge: caving. From the start, he loved his new sport. In Poland, there are a number of deep caves and Krzysztof began to explore them. Every time he reached the end of a new cave, he came across deep, dark water, but he knew that he couldn’t go into the water because of his ears.

Then, during a cycling trip, he met a diving instructor who taught him know to deal with the problems with his ears. As a result, he completed a diving course. He was interested in an underwater cave in the Czech Republic called Hranicka Propast. The cave was deeper than any he knew. He wondered how deep it really was and spent many hours diving into the cave to explore it. Eventually, he decided that it wasn’t safe to dive any deeper so he started using an ROV hit the bottom, 404 metres below the surface. It was the deepest underwater cave in the world.

A New Yorker, Ashima Shiraishi discovered rock climbing when she was six years old. She was playing with friends after school in Central Park and saw some men on a climbing in trainers and kept falling, but she loved it. She was having so much fun that she didn’t mind that the men were laughing at her because she was hopeless at climbing. Eventually she got to the top. From that moment she was determined to be a champion climber.

Ashima’s climbing is a family effort. Her father travels round the world with her, and her mother helps make the clothes she wears. Although only fifteen, she is a champion American rock climber, and well-known in her own country. Many people believe that she could be the best climber in the world one day.
