So the reader can infer that he isn't that smart. But the way I wrote my narrative Digger is smart in the inside but wants to come out harsh and mean, so he speaks in a dumbed down way. Digger comes out mean to everyone but his brother and sister, so you can tell that Digger is also a caring person.

He also didn't care when Brady said he found the drill and he knew it was him. He doesn't want to tell the truth because then he will get in trouble. If he gets in trouble, then his family will be disappointed and he might not get a chance to get into the marines.
