The trees show resilience and growth in spite of the concrete there. She uses the trees as a symbolism of herself. Her growth in spite of the fact that she lives in a ‘dangerous’ neighbourhood. Her growth in spite of the fact that she is Latino, a woman of colour who faces oppression because of her gender and race.

She uses trees as a metaphor for herself rather than another object because she states they are the only ones who understand her. She says the trees do not belong here, as they are lazy excuses planted by the city growing despite the concrete. She feels the same as this and thinks of herself as someone who doesn't belong in Mango Street.
