Group 2: The full moon may influence sleep and menstrual cycles, scientists say

Studies have shown that people tend to sleep later and get less sleep in the days before a full moon appears. One reason is that the sky gets brighter as each day passes. After the full moon occurs, the sky gets darker which is why people gain more sleep. As for menstrual cycles, the synchronization has grew less and less over time. In the research that was shown, it claims that women who had menstrual cycles that lasted longer than 27 days "intermittently synchronized with cycles that affect the intensity of moonlight." That said, there is less of a connection between the moon and menstrual cycles compared to sleep.

That no scientific study on the subject has shown any meaningful results but other than that it's fine. I did learn two new words Perigee and Apogee. Perigee is when the moon is closest to the earth and Apogee is when the moon is farthest from the earth.

For centuries, humans have believed that the lunar cycle affects sleep, violent behavior, mental health, and menstrual cycles. In ancient Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome, and in the Hindu religion, they thought the lunar cycle would affect the health of sick people and lunar eclipses were vulnerable times. While people like Isaac Newton thought the lunar cycle affected menstrual cycles, modern data tells otherwise, stating that there is no link between the two. A study was done to question the correlation between the lunar cycle and sleep, but the data was inaccurate and could not be replicated, which shows no link between the two. While many people still believe that a full moon night links to violent behavior and crime, studies have shown that there is no link that the lunar cycle affects mental health. In conclusion, the lunar cycle does not affect human behavior proved by current data. However, the lunar cycle affects other factors in our environment that could potentially affect our behavior.

The moon does have an effect on animal behavior. For instance, Meredith Palmer, an ecologist at Princeton University, spied on lions and their preys using 225 cameras. She found that the animals set up their plans for the night based on the moon's phases. When the moon is at its darkest, wildebeests and buffalos tend to form herds and stay in a safe area. Wildebeests are more willing to venture out as the night gets brighter.

Some say that since the moon has an impact on Earth's water, it may also have an impact on the water in our human bodies. The explanation for this is that it disrupts the alignment of water molecules in the nervous systems. But others speculate that the moon's gravitational force doesn't have a great enough presence or effects on a human's brain activity. Plus also the moon's effect on water only works on open bodies on water, not contained sources of water like the stuff in our bodies.

Scientist found a man where when there is high tide, the sleep duration was shorter than if it was low tide. They believed that the patients mood and sleep patterns were tracking rise and fall of the Earth's oceans which are driven by the gravitational pull of the moon. There is evidence that sleep varies across the lunar cycle. In 2013 study, scientist found that people took 5 minutes longer to fall asleep on average and slept for 20 minutes overall around a full moon compared to the rest of the month. Water molecules will respond to any tiny gravitational change. And so if plant cells are sensitive to tidal forces then there is no reason why human cells cant change according to the moon as well.

It was suggested by Aristotle and Pliny the Elder that the brain was the moistest organ of the body, making it vulnerable to the harmful influences of the Moon. There are still beliefs that the moon can disrupt the alignment of water molecules in the nervous system since the human body is made up of 80% water, causing erratic behavior. Against these statements, it was argued that gravitational effects of the moon are too miniscule to cause or create any effects on brain activity.

For example, in India, people avoid eating because it is believed to be harmful during the lunar eclipse. Overall there is no absolute proof that the moon affects human mental and physical health but it is possible that it might affect our sleep, moods and vitality.

This article follows two psychiatrist who discovered that their patients' bipolar disorder follows a very particular cycle. The patients' episodes followed the rise and fall of the Earth's ocean, which is controlled by the Moon's gravitational pull. Though, there has been some evidence suggesting that sleep may be affected by the lunar cycle, but a claim as large as "the moon controlling our mood" is hard to prove. There has also been research suggesting that since the ocean is affected by the Moon's gravitational pull, there are possibilities that we could be controlled by it as well- although we possess a smaller quantities. A biophysicist named Joachim FIsahn has taken the task to study plant cells in order to prove that we could be controlled by Moon's gravitational pull in some way.

According to the article people tend to sleep later and get less hours of sleep right before a full moon. In the study of the mensural cycle younger women are more likely to have their mensural cycle align with the moon cycle. As women get older this slowly fades.

The article goes on to list the different effects it may have, such as higher crime rates, car accidents, etc. However, along with listing the different effects, the article goes on to debunk them, chalking them up to mere coincidences. The main reasoning behind this fascination with specified events occurring more frequently during times where a full moon is present is because of something called "illusory correlation." Illusory correlation is the perception of an association that does not exist.

It continuous to say how wildebeests stays in one place when its dark, but when the nightlight is brighter, they move around in different places. Also, the moon gravitational pulls on the Earth's tides. Animals also tends to stalk their preys at night with less light and the moon being the only light source. And the moon helps predators with night vision making it more easy for them to see in the dark. The moon is less shown the polarized signal weakened which can throw insects off course and what certain animals can detect.

In fact the only thing the bright full moon is doing, is causing people sleep deprivation. A small study in 2013, of just 33 volunteering adults came to find that it was harder to sleep comparing a full moon to any other moon. Although there aren't many proven things the moon does to people, scientists are still constantly researching hypothesis about the moon. Its also been stated that on Monday Nov. 14, the moon will he as large as its ever appeared in the sky, and the possible date this will happen again is in the year 2034, according to NASA.

With these patients going through a bipolar disorder, Avery and Wehr are researching and observing their patients over a period of time in order to see how the lunar cycle changes and affects their patients change in mood. Although most of their theories are dismissed by past research, they discovered a connect that their patients changing mood schedule aligned with the changes in the tides of the ocean.
