- The Shang Dynasty lasted in China from around the mid-1700's or mid-1500's B.C. to 1111 B.C. after King Zhou was ousted by Wuwang (Newsela).
- The usage of the metal bronze was quite common throughout the Shang rule. Bronze containers for drinking were used during ceremonies and weapons such as axes were forged from bronze and so were chariots used in battle (Newsela).
- In the eyes of the Shang, metal was linked to royalty which is why the tombs of Shang kings were filled with hundreds of small bronze objects (Newsela).
- Chinese people started writing during this period and inscribed words on bones to start out and this lead to Chinese priests using tortoise shells and cattle bones to answer questions about the future. The Shang were also skilled workers that made objects out of several materials such as bone, jade, ceramics, stone, wood, shells and bronze (Newsela).
- The Shang utilized their own social pyramid in which the king was at the top, followed by top military leaders, priests, merchants and farmers. Burials were one way in which social classes were distinguished from one another. Rich people were buried in special tombs while lower classes were buried in pits of many sizes and some were even simply tossed in wells after they died (Newsela).
- Worshipping your ancestors was an important practice for the Shang. Shang Ti was the god the Shang worshipped above all else, and was believed to be the link between humans and other gods considered lesser to him (Newsela).
- The Shang Dynasty declined due to multiple battles with nomads and warring tribes within China (Newsela).
