A reflexivity statement is a personal reflection by a writer about their own beliefs, background, and experiences all of these three show how they influence the writers research, analysis and writing. I chose this place for my artifact because it is my birth place, this place has my family and my roots. This place has shaped me in many different ways and to this day it still has an impact on my personality. The way that I created my reflexivity statement was with help towards the end. I was doing it on my own in the beginning and it didn’t convince me. Everything in my head before writing this was my two homes afterwards I thought more about who I am and how they shaped me. I knew when to stop writing when I completely knew that it was my voice that was being portrayed. As a writer I think I am very simple not complex at all and I speak from the heart. I think this statement really shows how crude my emotions can be when I write. After the first draft. I showed it to my mom and she knew I wasn’t really portraying who I was so she helped me make it better. It was my mom the person that knows me best that showed me how she sees me through her eyes. This is what helped me in the end. I think this assignment shows really well how I write, there wasn’t many rules to this so I could just write freely as if I was writing in my diary.

Borderland Letter

The purpose of this assignment was to find an author that spoke to you and wanted to write them a letter about how their piece of writing impacted you, while asking them more about their writing, investigating about their personality and overall starting a conversation. In other words Rhetorical analysis of a pice of writing. I chose this pinned place which is Tucson, Arizona because this is the place that introduced me to this author and his piece of work touched me and I would’ve never been introduced to that if it weren’t for this town, this college and this borderlands class. For this text it was very easy to gather information and do outside research because I was very familiar with the topic. I selected the text “The Line Becomes a River” because it spoke about Cantù’s experience as a border patrol, this spoke to me because my dad also works as a border patrol and unlike Cantu he stayed in the work field. I thought that Cantu was very brave to share his expericnes and reasoning as to why he left the work field, this is what I kept thinking about while reading his piece. I collected all of the ideas and resemblance that I saw between Mr. Cantu and my dad and took notes on them. The things that I learned about rhetorical analysis are the following I learned how to understand the audience and the purpose of a piece of work. I also learned about the author Cantu which was due to the fact of researching more about him and his work. I learned different types of styles when it comes to writing and how to identify them. The research for this project wasn’t very hard, the author has a pretty open online life and I started there, who he was before his book and afterwards. I mainly did research about the author and this impacted my letter positively because I could write him with background knowledge. I think that I did a very good job at connecting my experiences with the authors, due to the fact that my dad works in the same work field as him. I think this made me reflect on my own background and how it is affected by my dads work. These connections impacted my study and understanding of the borderlands by knowing that I am not alone but I’m also part of a crow with the same experince in different fonts and we all need to support each other. Unit one made me find myself a little more and my style of writing, I feel very relief and thankful for the assignments that led me to understand myself more. I think the assignments in this unit relates to the rest of my writing by shaping it for the rest of the semester. I think I will be writing something like this again in the case of writing a letter or reflection on work cases.

Fieldwork Journal

This artifact was one of the steps that led to the final project fotonovela. This artifact taught me how to do research, dive deep into a topic, and cite sources the correct way. I chose the location for this artifact because it is where I based my project, the research for this project wasn’t very simple but very complex, I had to use outside sources because the library of the University of Arizona does not have a lot of information on my place. I observed a lot of different aspect of research, it is very easy to get overwhelmed and give up but having a plan will impact your research positively. I also notated a lot of the things I read in past units to help my overall outcome. The things I learned about the research process during this project is that it can be deceiving and lead you to false information, it can also be exhausting and make you want to give up. Not everything is negative, the positive things that I learned is that research will always make your projects stronger, research is an easy rabbit hole you can get stuck on but with control and structure can lead you to success. Writing to a particular audience can be challenging because sometimes you're not sure if what you’re writing will be positive or attractive to that specific audience. I also learned that knowing your audience will only make your work more effective and flow easily. I wanted to communicate with the children of border patrol parents and children that immigrated to this country at a very young age like myself. This assignment taught me how to use many writing conventions. The main one that I took as a lesson is the style and tone of my writing. I think the expectations for a specific style is very clear. For example when writing in first person the audience expects to narrate the story using “I” The conventions that I used to most, were tone, POV which I used third person. When breaking down the interview I used the most storytelling techniques. I learned that breaking down an interview is not easy and very time consuming. My feeling of this assignment are very neutral I think this is the assignment I spent the mostly time doing. I feel very proud of this assignment because it reflects my dedication to my work when I believe it matters when it comes to shaping my writing journey. I think this assignment relates to the rest of my writing because it became one of the building blocks for the final project. I honesty do not think I will be writing something like this anytime soon.

Board papelitos activity

This artifact is one of the many papelitos we did in class, these papelitos were different form the usual ones, this activity involved us going around the classroom and writing our papelitos on a sticky note or the board. I chose the board for all three of them. This activity represented progress and growth not only in the class but also in life throughout the semester. I chose my dorm Apache Santa Cruz because that is the place that I called home for this year, even though it wasn’t a pleasant home it was my safe space and where I grew the most this semester. I think this place represents the Borderlands concept by showcasing a different place that is not home but due to the circumstances it will be a halfway point home away from home. Borderlands to me means being part of two of more places and trying to find a middle ground in which you can belong to both of them and connecting them. This activity helped me build an understanding of what it means to be a writer in this course by showing me I am not alone and a lot of my peers are goring through the same experiences as me. Learning about authors in this class help me understand deeper of what it means to be part of the borderland experience. This activity helped me understand the traditions of different people in the same culture as me that I did to know about and plan on expanding my horizons. Borderlands literacy is valuable to me as a writer because it expanded my personality into something that I was always so scared of incorporating in my writing, my origins. I gained confidence from this expericnes not only in my writing by my origins, my ethnicity and overall my self worth.
