The Last Supper was a painting by Leonardo da Vinci that was based on the scene from John 13:21, when Jesus announced to his twelve disciples that one of them was going to betray him. As I studied the painting intently, I was able to observe certain aspects, principles and elements that Da Vinci used in order to make the painting beautiful. First, I found the details in the facial expressions of the disciples interesting because it depicts their surprised reactions toward Jesus’ announcement. Second, the principle of balance is evident because of how the twelve disciples are equally distributed on both sides. Lastly, the element of light was effectively used to show balance and symmetry within the painting. This can be seen in the painting’s foreground, the walls of the room, as well as its entrance. Besides these, I also noticed that Jesus, the central subject, appears to behave in a serene manner in the middle of a chaotic environment of His disciples’ emotions. For me, this is what truly makes the painting beautiful - the way Da Vinci reconciled peace and chaos through the principle of balance which ultimately serves as a timeless reminder for Christians like me.
