Milkweed is a historical fiction novel set in Poland during World War II. The main character is a small, young boy who comes to be known as Misha Milgrom. Misha does not have a back story. He has a necklace made from a yellow stone, which leads Misha’s friend Uri to believe that he is a gypsy. Misha is quick. He steals food to survive. When Misha and Uri are forced to move to the ghetto, Misha becomes close with Janina Milgrom, a Jewish girl he knew before the walls. They become brother and sister as Mr. Milgrom takes Misha in. They begin to smuggle food into the ghetto. Soon, there is a warning that the trains are coming to deport the Jews. Mr. Milgrom insists that Misha never leave Janina’s side, but she is infatuated with the trains. They get separated after the ghetto is emptied. Misha goes about life and wanders onto a farm. He works his way out of Poland into Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He eventually learns he has a daughter, and a granddaughter. Here, he belongs. He is no longer a nobody.

Every time I go to Philadelphia, I notice the town names along the interstate. I play games with the strange names and always try to pronounce them.
