Haiti was colonized by Spain in the 1490's when Christopher Columbus was "discovering" new lands, they referred to it as La Española.
France took control of the island around the 1650's, known as the French colony Saint-Domingue.
Under French rule, Saint-Domingue grew to be the wealthiest colony in the French empire, primarily due to their plantation crops.
The French relied on enslaved people to keep their economy going, they imported 800, 000 enslaved people (almost double the number of those in North America).
From 1791 through 1804, enslaved people and their allies in Saint-Domingue fought for their freedom.
The Haitian people gained independence from France and became the first country to be founded by former slaves.

They were taken to a detention center in Texas. They were denied asylum and deported back to Haiti.
In May 2021, the Biden administration granted temporary protected status for Haitians who were already in the United States, but that doesn't apply to the people massing near Del Rio.

Between 1911 and 1915, seven presidents were assassinated or overthrown in Haiti, increasing U.S. policymakers' fear of foreign intervention.
In 1914, the Wilson Administration sent marines into Haiti who removed $500,000 from the Haitian National Bank for safe-keeping in New York, giving the U.S. control of the bank.
The U.S. invaded Haiti to prevent anarchy.
In reality the Wilson administration was protecting U.S. assets in the area and preventing a possible German invasion.
They also gained complete control over Haitian finances, and the right to intervene in Haiti whenever the U.S. Government deemed necessary.
They intervened in Haiti's politics, forced the election of a pro-American president even though it went against what the Haitians wanted.
It also led to the creation of a military force made up of U.S. citizens and Haitians, but controlled by the U.S. This military force tried enforcing policies such as racial segregation, press censorship, and forced labor. Eventually the people revolted, forcing the U.S. to withdrawal.
