A black man by the name of Dick Rowland was accused of raping a white woman in broad daylight in an elevator.  Her name is Sarah Page. Page was a white woman who worked as a public elevator operator during 1921. Page cried out for help, who's cries were heard by a store clerk who then called the police. Rowland was then arrested and taken to jail.

An anonymous caller called the courthouse at 4pm and made a threat stating, "We're going to Lynch that negro, that black devil who assaulted that girl'.

Armed black men gathered at the house to protect Rowland. A group of whites congregated at the national guard armory demanding a supply of weapons. When denied entry, they threatened to break in.

When armed African American men showed up to protect Rowland, the sheriff in charge asked for help to "clear the negroes". There was a scuffle between a Black and a white man and a shot rang out. A race riot broke out and all hell broke loose.
