In this article, they have done a study of repeated readings and Neurological Impress Method (NIM). With both of these strategies paired the found great increase in student fluency. "In NIM, the teacher and student sit side by side, each with a copy of the same text. The teacher and student engage in a form of choral reading with the teacher reading slightly ahead of the student, essentially having the student "chase" the teacher's reading." A major theme in this article is the importance of repeated reading and how it increases fluency and fluency increases comprehension. In this article Rasinski discusses the importance of fluency. I have found that students can read well but their fluency is lacking. Rasinski explains it this way, "although most of the words they encountered were read correctly, their reading was marked by excessively slow, letter by letter, and word by word reading, lengthy pausing, and lack of expression." All of these weaknesses then lead to a disconnect in comprehension. Rasinski then goes into the analogy of learning to drive is like learning to read. First we observe for many years. Then we practice with a lot of assistance. Next we practice with the presence of an adult but with less assistance. Finally we are independent drivers or readers. I think this is a great way to look at reading. I think this was my favorite article.Timothy Rasinski seems to be a guru for fluency because he has written three out of the ten articles I have read. This article discusses ways to improve fluency through reader's theater. "Readers benefit from the exercise of reading scripts and working towards performance in two ways: first they reap the research-proven advantages of repeated reading and second, they are using auditory imagery or prosody to make sense of what they read." (2012, p.9) I think having my students study a script, poem, or book they have written is a great way to instill fluency. I would like to record my students reading a book, they are very familiar with. They would practice this book all week then on Friday I would record them reading it and send to parents or having out during conferences.
