Puerto Rico is a Caribbean island. It is an unincorporated U.S. territory. While often associated with its beaches, much of the island is mountainous.  This picture is of the El Junque rain forest. My father is from Puerto Rico which has greatly impacted my feelings about connection to culture and family.  I spent many summers in Puerto Rico as a child and remember them fondly.  One of the funniest stories that I always hear about those days is related to how my mom dressed me as a young child.  She is Irish and had a very easy going parenting style.  When we spent time with my grandparents in Puerto Rico, there was always a battle (friendly) about how I was dressed.  My grandmother thought all children needed to be properly dressed (and definitely with shoes on) at all times. I always went barefoot and hated to wear any more clothes than necessary.  My mom let me run around in my diaper.  It was a cultural thing.  My cousins were always "properly" dressed because that was a sign that you were educated and higher class. At first my mom felt judged because she didn't understand.
