Exhibition Information Report

Architecture is all around you and is something you see in your daily life. Architecture is the complex design of a structure. When you look at a building what do you feel? Does it have an impact on you? An architect does not only have to make a purposeful building, but also has to make a positive impact on the environment around it. Advanced technical innovation has changed architectural design, including more energy efficiency and improved safety features. Technical innovation has also led to some buildings being seen as controversial.

Architecture plays an important role in our society. An architect will plan and design a building like no other on the market. They also have to make the building functional, safe and meet the structural requirements. An architect will help you determine exactly what you need and will design a purposeful, functional and creative building. These can include a wide range of projects from a house extension to a multi level, world famous skyscraper. Architecture is everywhere and it affects the urban environment on a personal level. Architects use their skills to design imaginative buildings so people can have an emotional connection. Not everyone has the same opinion on architectural design.

Have you ever seen ‘The Gherkin’ and ‘The Glass Pyramid’? They are two of the most controversial buildings of twentieth century. When the architects submitted their designs for these buildings the criticism was damning. Both of the architectural businesses are known for their innovative approach to design. These buildings were controversial because they were ultra modern, used glass and steel structures and were nothing like the buildings around them. ‘The Glass Pyramid’ is the extension of The Louvre in Paris. ‘The Glass Pyramid’ was a very intricate design that let in light to the underground galleries. The structural frame was made of metal to withstand Paris’s weather and the weight of the glass. The design of ‘The Gherkin’ has many energy efficient features. Innovation in using materials has had a positive environmental impact but not everyone agrees with the designs.

Have you ever noticed the built environment around you? What do you see and what do you feel? The built environment is a man made environment where people live, work and play. It includes homes, buildings, features and facilities. The built environment is important to society because it’s where we live, who we are and affects us all.

If designed well, the built environment enhances the development and well being of children and young people, and supports healthier communities. It has the ability to inspire people’s imagination. It enables social gathering with family and friends and it connects people with nature and their community. Also it can influence people’s enjoyment of life. A responsibility of architects is to design buildings which have a positive impact on the community. Their architecture has to enable people to feel safe, happy and comfortable where they live, work and play.

If architecture is designed well it will positively influence and impact people’s lives and their environment. The style of architecture can often be controversial to some people. In my opinion architecture is under appreciated in our community. Architecture is not just buildings to me, but also creative design. So an architect designs a building thinking of the impact on the environment around it. Over time the architectural design has changed and will continue to change, but never lose its value.

Exhibition

Hi my name is will Travis and this is my exhibition about how architecture has changed our society. Architecture is the most common pieces of art that you will see day today while walking around. Architecture can come in many forms it could be a model of a house A skyscraper apartment block and a real house. I chose architecture because it is a growing controversial issue. And is innovative and scientific because architecture changes over time and has to be structurally sound.

What I did for my say Was a tutorial for on how to make a house on the website and app 5D planner. This was challenging because I had to make it as simple as I could.

for my make I made a Lego model which was an earthquake machine simulation this was challenging because I had to get all the gear ratios right. I also built a Lego house which was based off a eco-friendly self heated house which was made under of dirt.

For my right I made a information report which was challenging to make but I overcame that challenges by getting help from my mentor and rereading my work. When I was researching I found some interesting facts like the broken window Theory which is a theory where in poor places there are broken windows which will lead to glass being everywhere and run down areas and that can lead to more crime and less advantaged people with no medication like us.

for my do I made a Kahoot! a Kahoot! is a quiz which is educational and teaches people about things I made one on architecture this was challenging because I had never done one before but I overcame my challenges and I persevered by re-trying things and doing new things.

During this exhibition term I learnt that time is precious and lots of fun facts about architecture some parts of it were very challenging and I had to overcome them but in the end I finished on time and it was fun. In this inquiry I grew very fond of architecture and designed a few buildings of my own to me architecture isn’t just buildings but are places where you can hang out feel safe and be happy

Other Skyrail projects have already been completed.

Do these effect your views on the Parkdale project and why?

They do. I purposely road my bike down to Carrum to have a good look at the Skyrail there. They have done a very good job down there. I liked it.

Will Skyrail put you off going down to Como Parade and why?

No, it won’t. In height of summer, the sun will still very much shine on the cafes. I won’t abandon Parkdale because of it.

But I do wonder how it ages (the big cement Skyrail). It might make the decision to move from Parkdale in say 10 years’ time, an easier decision to make.

How do you think Skyrail will impact the small businesses and cafes on Como Parade?

While it is under construction, it will impact them. I would guess their sales would be done 20%. People might choose to drive to Mordialloc or Mentone instead. However, this work, also brings a lot of workers who will want coffee’s, food etc. Station Shop for example could well do better during this time.

Are you in favour of Skyrail or not? Please explain your answer.

No……….But I am also a person who wants ‘Progress’. I want things to improve / change etc. It will bring new life to the area, which is hard to imagine now. By my estimate, the Skyrail will need to start 400m before Warrigal Road. Then run 1k between Warrigal Road and Parkers road. Then a minimum of 400m after Parkers road. So, this Skyrail will be minimum of 1.8k long. I suspect, that it will good further than 400m past Parkers Road. Say 800m. So, Skyrail for Parkdale could well be 2.2k long. Westgate Bridge is 2.6k long for a comparison.

Then again, I don’t want a 1.8k trench running through Parkdale either. Unless they built over it so you couldn’t see most of it.

It is hard to do, but I think the push to save Parkdale, also needs to come up with a list of demands, that Parkdale wants if Skyrail does go ahead. Demands like:

So, what could be under the 1k of Skyrail between Parkers Road and Warrigal Road?

Station itself – 200m.

Demand that they fix Parker road from Nepean Hwy to the village (bad now, all the construction will make it worst)

Demand that they fix all the roads that will circle the Skyrail

Demand that they fix up all paths in the village, train side and side where shops are.

Basketball nets by 4 – 100m

Scooter park – 50m

Table tennis tables – 20m

Playground – 50m

Exercise equipment – two separate areas

Bike lane to join the Mentone one and be made ready to join Mordialloc.

Places to store / stand up your bike

At least 20 benches along length of Skyrail

4 BBQ areas

Mature trees (better job than they have done at Mentone)

Real grass

Vibrant plants like they currently have at Parkdale

Rest for car spaces

So, yes the benefits can be more. But we need to start fighting for the plan B (Skyrail with all the improvements above), as much as we are for plan A (No Skyrail

1 When it is being built the small businesses will have to close down.
2. I can’t say if I am for or against sky rail. Because I need to see a final design for what it will look like.
3. No. We need to support local businesses. If it’s designed well it could be a positive to connect two sides of Como Parade.
4. Things that I would like to see under the sky rail would be a kids kiosk/shops kids play area which could include a trampoline/jump sensor for kids we would also need greenery underneath and around the sky rail to make it feel nice and fresh.
5. We need to factor that in Parkdale it’s a very narrow space unlike Carrum and Mentone so we will have to make a design that would fit in the Parkdale space.
6. While being constructed they will be lots of negatives because there will be a lot of traffic to get through to the other side of the rail. But after the construction there will be a long-term positive because you’ll be able to get to the other side easier than before because when you sit at the boom gate you stay there for 2 to 7 minutes sitting still in your car.

I think it is really good that we have looked at the tasks you can work on independently and those that I can specifically guide you on. I look forward to next week. Mrs Kerr

Week 3

I am really pleased Will that you have followed through with researching for your written task.
