Sretenje is an Orthodox Christian holiday which takes place on 15. February every year. It is an important day in Serbian tradition because it is the State day of Serbia and it marks the beginning of the Serbian revolution. Children in Serbia especially like it because we go on holiday for a whole week then.

Slava

2026-04-09 20:36:36 UTC

Slava is one of the most important Serbian traditions. It is a special celebration where family and friends gather together, share a meal, talk, and enjoy each other’s company. Slava is a religious festivity dedicated to a family’s patron saint, and it is passed down from generation to generation.

When guests arrive at the house, they are warmly welcomed and usually offered žito (boiled wheat mixed with sugar and walnuts), which has symbolic meaning in the tradition. The host also serves various traditional foods, and the table is often full of different dishes prepared for the occasion. The atmosphere is friendly and respectful, combining both celebration and spiritual significance.

Christmas

2026-04-16 21:19:55 UTC

In Serbia, Christmas is one of the most beautiful and joyful holidays of the year. We celebrate it on January 7th. The celebration begins on January 6th, which we call "Badnji dan". Traditionally, we burn an oak branch in the evening, called "Badnjak", either in a fireplace or in front of the church. We also eat fasting foods, like fish or dried fruits. The part I love most is Christmas morning, when a special homemade bread "Česnica" is made. Inside it is a coin, and whoever finds the coin in their bread is said to have good luck and wealth all year long. I love Christmas not for the gifts received, but for the time I get to spend with my family.
