To what extent did the Open to Learning 2 day course meet your expectations?

It certainly met my expectations as I was asking for the PD for a while and finally got the chance to upskill my conversational skills.

I wasn't sure what to expect but it was good

I went in with a surface level idea that it may help with tricky conversations, however it exceeded my expectations and helped me become aware of my own patterns and consider different approaches to these conversations.

There were no expectations coming into this course only to be informed and wowed and it most certainly achieved that!

It filled in the gaps I had from hearing colleagues who had attended the course previously using the theory and the language and gave me the full understanding and ability to place it in a context familiar for myself and ensure that everyone in our SLT speaks the same language and is aware of the theory as a whole rather than knowing bits and pieces second hand from others experiences.

It gave me the tools to have more meaningful conversations

It went above and beyond. I didn't know much about OTL before the course and have now left both workshops with knowledge to support me in my leadership role. It has also helped me to better understand myself as a leader and individual.

It has broadened my thinking with my approach around how to address concerns and be open to negotiate others values and opinions.

How do you think your OTL learning will help guide the work you are leading in your school?

Single and double loop conversations and being open to listening instead of heading into a conversation with an agenda.

I think it compliments how we work with teams

It will really support me with fostering positive relationships and ensuring people feel completely heard and respected with each conversation.

It can help support me with having those hard conversation but also to be open and listen to what others reasons or views are as well as to inquire and clarify before enforcing or making decisions. Note: I'm not a leader of anything at my current school.

It provided a framework and structure to engage in challenging conversations, especially with having the role-playing opportunities and the modelling of others attending the course. It has also provided the relational trust to be able to have colleagues support when these opportunities occur.

I am managing 12 people so it will help me to be a more responsive leader

It has already helped immensely with building stronger professional communities as a few of our staff attended the PD at the same time. We have been able to share knowledge and scenarios and work together to problem solve situations.

Using OTL strategies to listen intently, inquire into others thinking or reactions, being genuine in establishing a common ground, and plan on how to move forward in a respectful manner; I believe will support much healthier and more professional relationships with colleagues, whanau, and other professionals.

What are some leadership challenges that you anticipate your new learning might address?

Having conversations that I would normally put on the back burner, but now I can seek to understand the person's thinking and what they value.

Addressing issues more directly and in a more timely manner

Conflict

Dealing with tricky situations or people.

How to have conversations without worrying about the barriers and feeling like the relationship will break down. The ability to process scenarios and have a follow through process to rely on rather than let opportunities and 'noticings' go by without the challenging conversations.

The conversations that I have been avoiding around performance and interpersonal relationships

Conversations with colleagues as I often use the 'soft sell' approach being quite a relational person.

People understanding a genuine concern and the purpose for needing to address it sooner rather than later. Also, the opportunity to present something of concern with a more open approach to working together as a team to resolve a matter.

Now you have completed the OTL course, what links can you see between your work in school and the broader Kōtuitui goal of developing cultural competencies (related to your school's work with Tātaiako/Tapasā)?

Values and beliefs will be explored in more detail.

Continually checking assumptions

N/A (not part of this or aware of who is doing what in my school)

The OTL course gives me the tools to facilitate conversations around cultural competencies

The ability to work collaboratively in a respectful manner which embraces and understands each persons values. Knowing that all parties are working and learning together to find a solution and negotiate a way forward on what needs to be addressed.

What do you see as your next steps in terms of growing your leadership capacity?

Strengthening my weakness, setting clear goals.

Continue working alongside other leaders

Taking some risks, forward thinking before having these conversations, and going in assuming I could also be the one who is wrong. Having a genuine open mind.

Apply what I have learnt to the classroom, staff meetings and personal life.

Having a theory base rather than just having the practice of being in a leadership role.

I would like to have coaching around using the tools I have learnt. I would also like more of my team to attend the course.

The OTL workbook has really helped as it's something I can refer back to and reflect upon the notes I wrote. I would also like to look more into the student centered leadership text to further develop my knowledge and thinking.

Discipline myself to implementing strategies on thinking things through, taking a moment to breathe and figure out best approach to improve a situation. Use every moment or opportunity to practice skills.
