Attitude Toward the Elderly

In the Philippines, elderly are shown much respect even if they are strangers. My parents always remind us to be respectful, thankful, and be considerate of elders regardless of who they are. We cannot even talk or answer back to elders even when they are wrong because that would be considered disrespectful. We just have to keep quiet and agree with them most of the time. Also, we use words such as "po" and "opo" to show respect during a conversation. Addressing them by just their names is also unacceptable, so we have to use filipino terms that translate to aunt, uncle, sister, brother, grandmother, grandfather, etc. In my own family and in our own culture in general, elders play an important role in the society so they must be respected at all times.

Major Decisions

Within my family, major decisions are actually made by my mother, but sometimes by my father as well. Sometimes, even though my father would say something, the final say would still be from my mother. In most cases, my mother deals with everything, be it finances, education, us (their children) and so on. However, she would still consult my father and would be open to suggestions. For example, both of my parents agreed that I should pursue my college education in the United States. It was a big move for me, so I was glad that both of them had a say on it and happily agreed with one another.

I am the middle child and I have two brothers. I would say that gender roles were practiced in my family. I remember my mother would always assigned me "lighter chores" such as washing the dishes, laundry, mopping, dusting, and so on because I was a girl, and my brothers would get the heavier tasks. I did not mind doing household chores, but it was always stressed how important it was for me to learn all of them because I am a girl. Another one would be how stricter my parents are to me because again, I was a girl. For example, I can't really go home late, but my brothers sometimes could without getting in too much trouble. To be fair, my mother was really strict to the three of us, but my punishments are worst than my brothers.

Cooperation vs Competition

I cannot remember a situation where my parents instilled competition amongst us. They always told us to work with another because that makes everything easier to accomplish and improves our sibling relationship. Also, my parents always say how we should value one another and never aim to outsmart one or the other. They always reminded us that in the end and when both of them are gone, it is just me and my brothers who can help one another especially in times of need. I really appreciate the values of cooperation, unity, and generosity that our parents instilled in us. It makes so much difference when there is no competition, just working together and supporting one another every time.
