Figurative Language: Period 1 by Brittany Rivera

Let's examine excerpts from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech to identify how the quote impacts your head, or thinking, and your heart, or emotions.

Respond to three questions for each quote:

1. How is this an example of the figurative language device listed?
2. How does this figurative language impact your head, or thinking?
3. How does this figurative language impact your heart, or emotions?

1. This is an example of personification because in the quote he states, "That one day the nation will rise," and that shows that he has a strong dream and belief that everyone will have equal rights.

2. This figurative language impacts my head and thinking because it shows that he his talking about the nation as a whole and how this whole nation will "rise" up and all men will be equal.

3. And this impacts my emotions because he is talking about the nation as a whole so everyone comes together in unity.

this quote is showing symbolism because the quote symbolizes equality because it states "...Georgia sons of former slaves and sons of former slave-owners will be able to sit down together at a table of brother hood." which makes me think of equality.

This is an example of symbolism because Martin Luther King is saying that the red hills of Georgia will soon be the place where slaves can sit down and live a nice, equal life. This piece of symbolism impacts my head and thinking because it's telling me that all the black people's hard work for equality will soon pay off. This piece of symbolism impacts my heart and emotions because it's making me have joy that someday, everyone's hard work will pay off.

1) This is a metaphor because it uses the word is to compare civil rights to a summer transitioning into autumn.
2) This impacts my head and thinking because it allows me to see the severity of the segregation between the White people and the Black people.
3) This impacts my heart or emotions because it makes me feel their determination to get civil rights.

1) This is an example of symbolism because it sitting together usually symbolizes unity. This shows that they wanted equal rights and integration for both races.
2) This impacts my thinking because it makes me realize that the descendants of former slaves still wanted to live along side the people who enslaved them or their ancestors.
3) This impacted my heart or emotions because it shows that they were willing to forgive, and move on.
