This quote shows that it was a flashback and it was no accident, it was a murder. A murder that he feels like he was guilty of and he committed. And after this scene you can feel the guilt that he feels.

Another one of her many frequently used craft moves is symbolism. There are a lot of different symbols throughout the book, but the one that stood out the most were the china soldier figures. The china soldier figures symbolize two things. At the beginning of the book, the china figures symbolize the soldier boys in the poem, “The Ten Little Soldier Boys'' which is hung up in everyone’s room in the house. The figures continue to symbolize the soldiers in the poem until the first couple of deaths at the house of Anthony Marston and Mrs. Rogers. After they both died, the guests realize that they themselves symbolize the china figures as the boys in the poem. When they first arrived at the island, there were ten china figures in the center of the dining room table. In chapter six, Mr. Rogers was in the dining room when he realized that now there were only eight of the figures instead of ten on the dining table. Mr. Rogers then came to realize that every time someone in the house dies, a figure disappears.  “But now, sir, when I came to clear away. See for yourself if you don’t believe me. There’s only eight, sir! Only eight! It doesn’t make sense, does it? Only eight…” (Christie 106). This quote shows that the soldier boys symbolize the deaths of the guests who are at the house. As General Macarthur is sitting on the island, he says to some of the other guests - "There is so little time - so little time. I really must insist that no one disturbs me.”(Christie Chapter 8, Section II)  and  "None of us are going to leave the island. That's the plan. You know it, of course, perfectly. What, perhaps, you can't understand is the relief!"(Christie Chapter 8, Section II). The General is telling the others a few things -  they don’t have much time and none of them will be leaving the island. Although the others, like Blore and Lombard thought of him as insane and Vera simply couldn't imagine herself dying, he was correct. As a matter of fact, none of the guests had much time left. They were all killed days later. They also never left the island. Since all of their S.O.S messages were ignored and there were no boats around, they stayed on the island, watching each other slowly lose both their sanity and lives.

She was suspicious, he could see that. But who was it on the operating table? They shouldn’t have covered up the face like that. . . . If he could only see the face. . . . Ah ! that was better. He was saying how he was told to murder someone. But when he really was in the operating room doing surgery on that woman he was drunk so after the surgery and she died he never drank any alcohol again.

The author uses many different examples of both Symbolisms and Flashbacks throughout the entire story. This is shown in  the way the lives of the guests were leading to this point and the reasons they are thought to have committed these crimes

This quote shows that each one of the ten people picked to go to the island had something to do with someone's death. Each character was involved in some sort of death or murder. They were sent or chosen to go to the island because each one of them had something to do with death.

They relate because both share a common theme which is the power of guilt. Agatha Christie uses flashbacks to show the power of guilt on Armstrong while Rod Serling uses point of view to show the power of guilt on Mr schmidt. In “And Then There Were None” and “Death's Head Revisited'', you can clearly see both authors displaying the power of guilt. 

  In the novel “And then there were none” by agatha christie, The theme of guilt is demonstrated in multiple scenes. Agatha Christie uses the literary device of flashbacks in multiple scenes and uses it to show the guilt the characters are feeling. One particular scene that stood out to me was When Dr.Armstrong had a flashback to him killing his patient. This scene stood out to me because Armstrong was flashing back to the time he operated on someone while being drunk. The person who he operated on died. “Drunk, that's what it was-drunk… and I operated(Christie 72). This quote clearly demonstrates that Dr Armstrong feels guilty for what he did and he knows that if he had been sober the patient would have lived. Armstrong constantly thinks about the patient and he even had a dream about it. Christie did a great job of showing flashbacks to demonstrate the power of guilt.

In the Twilight Zone episode “Deaths head revisited”, Rod Serling shows the power of guilt using Point of view. He uses point of view by showing Mr Schmidt how the concentration camps were from the prisoners perspective. When Mr Schmidt was dwelling on the past of the concentration camps he was happy and proud of what he did. However, when he saw what the camps were like from Beckers point of view, he realized how terrible it was for the prisoners and he drove him to go insane. At the beginning of the episode he was having flashbacks while smiling. He seemed proud of what he had done. This was until Becker said and the other prisoners put him on trial. He started to feel nervous and you could tell he was starting to go crazy. When Becker said “Now you see how it feels”(Serling) It was clearly demonstrated by Rod Serling that Schmidt was seeing what it was like from a different perspective.. Schmidt was even able to feel the pain of the prisoners. Rod Serling was able to show the watcher a clear demonstration of how point of view can show the power of guilt.

After reading the novel, and watching the show, I was able to see how different literary devices can be used to show point of view. Agatha Christie was able to use flashbacks to show the power of guilt. Rod serling was able to use Point of view to show the power of guilt. Christie and Serling both did a great job of showing the power of guilt using different techniques.
