Gatsby invites Nick to a party at his mansion, which he accepts. There, he finds that he was only one of few people who were invited. Nick and Jordan later meet up, and dark rumors about Gatsby spread through Nick's small group of friends. Gatsby takes Jordan away to have a secretive conversation, and not long after she returns, Nick leaves the party. Nick goes on to describe his experiences with Jordan, who he says is dishonest. Still, he stays around her, despite claiming that he himself is "one of the few honest people that he knows."

Nick once again attends another party at Gatsby's mansion. Here, he lists off the names of many wealthy people who attended the party. Gatsby later shows up at Nick's house and invites him on a date, to which Nick accepts. During the ride, Gatsby tells Nick about his past and provides souvenirs from his past to dispel Nick's disbelief. When they arrive at the restaurant, Nick meets Meyer Wolfshiem, a man who Gatsby claims fixed the World Series in 1919. After lunch, Nick meets up with Jordan, who tells him of Gatsby's love for Daisy, and how he wishes for Nick to help him get closer to her.
