in this article the doctor talks about the five second rule and talks about if its really significant, it is true even when food falls it will pick up bacteria but not as much if the floors are clean. He goes on to proclaim how some can get paranoid at the idea of bacteria being on food but that is should not cause to much harm on the surface. He also stated he eats food even if it falls to the ground.

https://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/11/upshot/im-a-doctor-if-i-drop-food-on-the-kitchen-floor-i-still-eat-it.html?rref=collection%2Ftimestopic%2FFood%20Safety&action=click&contentCollection=timestopics&region=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=5&pgtype=collection&_r=0
