Washington didn't want to be involved with other countries because he thought it would hurt America. Britain and France declared war against each other and Washington decided to stay neutral to avoid conflict. Jay's Treaty forced the British troops out of the US. Pinckney's Treaty let America travel on the Mississippi River, and Spain agreed.

He was always formal as president. He wore a sword with his outfits that were of the latest fashion. He bowed to his visitors instead of shaking their hands. He always greeted people and talked to them if they had business with the president and he always made time for his family. He also only served two terms meaning that no president would be able to serve more than two. All of these things set an example for all of the other presidents to come.

Parties started forming in Washington's first term. There were federalists that wanted a strong central government and an alliance with the British and there were Democratic-Republicans who wanted strong states and an alliance with France. Washington didn't support either party because he thought it would divide the country.
