I've tried a digital notebook at the start of the year. It had different sections for different purposes. In theory, it was fantastic, but the logistics of applying it were difficult. It took a lot of trial/error. A teacher must choose their words carefully on how students use it (i.e. submit, share, email, etc.) This can create a lot of confusion and extra work. I still like the idea, but put it on the shelf for now until I can work on it more effectively.

I started the digital notebook earlier in the year (Google Doc format) and through some trial and error, it is starting to work. A good number of students are buying in, especially since I'm making it a part of my regular class routine and holding the kids accountable. I'm looking forward to sifting through the Shared Classroom folders more often to find student journal entries for models/exemplars etc. It is really helping me get a glimpse into student writing in a fast and efficient way.

I like the idea of the digital notebook and have worked with students who were assigned a digital notebook. However, my students had a very difficult time working with the notebook. The students had trouble inserting their answers into the slides. I found it took a lot of time to do a simple task. The tips about adding audio feedback was very helpful.

I have been using more projects and presentations as assessments this year and I think that the audio feedback is a much better way to be specific in highlighting student strengths and areas for improvement. As far as the digital notebook-it was nice to see that students could still choose to complete an assignment on paper and then add it to the digital notebook (for those students that prefer pen & paper).

I started the year with digital notebooks that included hyperlinks and bookmarks so that students could jump to specific sections in the doc. Nice idea in theory. In practice, it created more time on my end to sift through student work. I will try again in my next unit, but with a much simpler format.

I do see, though, how it could become quite time-consuming for a teacher with a large number of students in their classes. If bugs can be worked out, and if it could be used efficiently, it would be a valuable tool in our hybrid world.
I am also loving the ability to leave students audio feedback.

In the College Writing class, students complete writing warm-ups in a digital notebook. In English 11, the focus is on responding to reading in their notebooks. In both classes, students will choose an entry to turn in for feedback, or they will share their responses out loud and I provide feedback on-the-spot. I have not yet tried commenting or prompting students with audio feedback, but I think it could be a really useful tool.
