Group: Maria Carolina Marra, Valentina Costa, João Praia, and Maria Luiza Sauguellis

Our goal is to explore the characteristics and actions of a "Know-It-All-Leader". Their name is pretty self-explanatory. Know it all leaders believe they have an answer to everything. Their name speaks for itself, they think they know it all. But there is a problem with that, they don’t know everything. These characteristic is mainly because they feel insufficient and insecure, that’s why they say those types of things. Example: I told you so.

Their “superior” attitude implies that the others are dumb, stupid, weak, and inferior to them. They always speak in an authoritative tone even when they know they are wrong.

For Know-It-All leaders, knowing everything gives them power and makes them feel less insufficient.

Some characteristics:
- Not open for opinions or advice.
- Offer information and/or advice whether it was asked or not.
- Some are perfectionists
- Self-absorbed

Paternalistic leader

Maria Suplicy, Miguel Carneiro, Stela Lopes, Ana Mueller, Manuela Bruno

What is it:

Paternalistic leadership is a type of leadership where the leader reflects a parental image viewed by its employees. In this way, the leader treats the employees and partners as a big family, expecting trust, obedience, and loyalty coming from the workers. The leader is seen as someone who would always know what’s best for the organization and listen to the employees, but in the end, the final decision is taken by him. This could be a type of leadership where the employees would feel safe.

Characteristics:

Very influential

empowerment

compassion

guidance

good organizational skills and decisiveness

Example 1: Henry Ford

Example 2: José Mourinho

Positive aspects :

When the leader takes a paternalistic approach, the participants tend to work better, putting more effort into creating something they are proud of, because they feel like their efforts are validated and because they become invested in the group's success.

Negative aspects:

Although having plenty of advantages, paternalistic leaderships also contain considerable disadvantages. One of the first issues is that this model is closely associated with the patriarchy and follows a form of authoritarian route by having the leader in charge of decisions. This can not only lead to abuse of power, but it can discourage participants and create a sense of dependency with the leader since their opinions aren’t as important.
