         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Battle of Devil's Backbone took place in Sebastian County Arkansas on a mountain The Battle of Devil's Backbone developed on September 1st, 1863.James G. Blunt ordered Col. William Cloud continued in pursuit of the Confederate forces that had withdrawn from Fort Smith and were chased to Old Jenny Lind. The battle ended with a Union victory, and this battle was important because the Confederates wouldn't have participated in the Camden Expedition.</p>]]></description>

By the spring of 1864, years of war had taken a toll on the agricultural output of northwestern Arkansas, and thousands of people were forced to move to Federal posts in order to obtain food. </p>]]></description>

         <title>Major-General Patrick Cleburne</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Major-General Patrick Cleburne was Arkansas's most remarkable military leader. He enlisted in the 41st Foot in the British army.&nbsp; In 1849 he purchased his discharge and left for America eventually settling in Helena, Arkansas in June 1850  and earning his citizenship in 1855. Cleburne joined the Confederate army in 1861, and was elected as colonel of the 15th Arkansas Infantry. On November 30th of 1864, he was killed at the second battle of Franklin. </p>]]></description>

         <title>Brigadier General. William N. R. Beall</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>William N. R. Beall served as a Confederate general from Arkansas during the Civil war. He also served as an agent for the Confederate government to raise funds to purchase supplies for Confederate troops in federal prison. With the outbreak of hostilities in 1861, Beall continued to serve with his unit and was transferred to Fort Kearny, Nebraska. After Arkansas seceded in May, Beall remained with his unit, resigning only in August 1861, one of the last Union officers to do so. He was captured along with his entire command were captured on July 9, 1863, five days after the surrender of Vicksburg. He died in McMinnville, Tennessee, on July 26, 1883.</p>]]></description>
