If the family focused on in the story listened to the superstitious stories of the Sgt. Major, they may have gone without any fatalities, instead, they were ignored and they faced the consequences. This is part of the reason why I chose the four leafed clover; the clover isn't a negative symbol. Before the main story even starts, the Sgt. Major. tells stories of what has and will go wrong, and in the face of this, Herbert's family entirely ignores it.
