This first stage is crucial because it determines how you begin to grow. If your needs were met as a baby (if you were consistently cared for and nurtured), you will develop a base of trust. Lori’s mom didn’t work when she had Lori which meant she was always home and there when Lori needed something. Lori’s mom was very consistent and was always quick to tend to Lori when needed.

At this stage, children begin to gain a little independence by doing basic actions or preferring something over the other. Lori was able to make mistakes without receiving punishment or backlash for it. Lori was able to do simple tasks on her own, but received help if she needed it. By allowing Lori to gain control and do things on her own, her parents helped her develop a sense of autonomy.

This stage is important because it's the transition from childhood to adulthood. Children become more independent and begin to think about what their future will look like. They are trying to figure out who they are and their self esteem can change a lot. Lori felt comfortable with who she was and already knew she wanted to help people in her career. She didn’t feel any shame and was able to accept the changes that were happening. Lori felt content with herself which gave her a sense of identity.

Lori is not at this stage yet, but she predicts she will have integrity because she is happy with how her life has been and feels it was well lived.
