As Enkidu was wandering the forest, a trapper (hunter) came across him and created a plan with his father to grab a temple woman who can then seduce him so the beast will reject Enkidu and the trapper can hunt its food again. Therefore, the temple lady came and seduced Enkidu, and in return, the beast rejected him, and the lady told him of Gilgamesh and told him to follow her and live a civil life. In which, he got married and then encountered a man who explained that Gilgamesh was a serial rapist and this upset Enkidu, so he seek out to find Gilgamesh and challenge him for his ways. Last class I learned a lot about Gilgamesh and how he was a tyrant who obsessed over women and treasures. Enkidu, however, was more concerned with the animals and fairness, even going as far as stopping Gilgamesh (who he yearned to meet, as a friend) from committing what many would consider wrong. The two are rivals in strength and beauty, yet stand for different purposes. I also found it interesting how Gilgamesh's mom helped create Enkidu. The last big thing I learned about was Gilgamesh and Enkidu's journey, where the two fought side by side despite Enkidu's doubts, and slayed a monster. What if Gilgamesh never lost the rejuvenating plant to the snake? If he did become immortal how would he spend his eternal life. The story of Gilgamesh could have been a number of different types of stories but instead was almost like a coming of age story. Gilgamesh through friendship discovered who he wanted to be in this life we are given. Enkidu is transformed, and his beast-like attributes are sapped out, leaving only a "god" who take Enkidu's form. The prostitute colludes with Enkidu, telling him of Gilgamesh and his atrocities. While Gilgamesh was on his quest to obtain immortality, he was given advice from, Siduri, a tavern keeper. She told him that all humans die and only the gods live forever. Therefore it's important for him cherish the pleasures of the world and to live a good life before he dies. Gilgamesh did not heed her warning and continued with his quest. As a result, he went through many hardships but at the end of his journey he was able to learn from her advice. I believe that if he had heeded her warning he would have felt like a coward for not trying. The awful things described in this epic have happened throughout history across the globe in many different nations in many very different cultures, and yet the people who wrote the epic understood these things were wrong. I just think its kind of interesting that this mother civilization had such different morals than the civilizations that would come after it. I also learned that the internal struggles people go through are timeless and have been happening for millennium.
