Name: Edward Cheng
Student ID: 0313466

The building that I chosen to represent my identity is Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The building create a gateway that represents a continuous journey through inspiration from the region’s historically and cultural significant as well as reflecting the malaysian creativity and identity through architecture. Within the overall concept of the terminal complex buildings which seek to achieve a strong and dynamic symbiosis of a distinct Malaysian identity and the high-tech imagery of an airport, making use of the latest technologies. For example, the supporting structure of the roof of the terminal building loosely refers to the forms of Malaysian oil palm plantations. The roof itself is formed of hypar shells, evoking sophisticated and abstract references to the Islamic dome whilst simultaneously projecting a high-tech image. The forms of the contact pier and the satellite building refer primarily to those of the aircraft they service. Gentle curves are introduced in section and plan, whilst the roof is supported by a dynamically raked structure. The overhanging eaves of the roof evoke traditional Malaysian architecture. All these concept and structure are concluded as how a expression and future operational and flexibility of malaysian are and dreams are the begining of the future. Thus, I use this building as an psychological or emotional perspective to represent myself. Where dream is the way that I interpret myself through the architecture and functional of KLIA. I believed that dream of an airport shows that my life would benefit from new relationships, new dimensions, a range of backgrounds, some travel, and a new phase of life. Airport dream usually represent creativity, freedom and health, where reflected what am I doing now. An airport, because of its transitory nature, is a place for new experiences. I am ready to consider my spiritual progression, to move into a new way of perceiving life and all it has to offer. It signifies the desire for freedom, high ideals, ambition and hopes. In the dream of an airport, it reflected that I entering a stage of transition, making decisions to move into new areas of life. For example, in my dream I may have found myself waiting in an airport terminal, I might missed my flight or I might found myself in a crowded airport. However, the positive changes are afoot if the overall conditions within my dream are positive in nature, where I will complete control of the situations within my dream. As new beginnings in my life are needed if in my dream can experienced any type of emotional pain which involved emotionally upset. The areas of my life that this dream is connected with a new beginnings are on the cards and the new phase of life is possible. However, it may also indicate myself or should be, making a fresh assessment of my own identity.

This is primarily because that the building gives scope to the spiritual uplifting for the occupants with its scale and the playing of lights from above as well as the front of the walls, representing heaven through the cross. The structure also gives importance to the external architectural minimalism and the peaceful environment within, strengthen by the reflective material that reflects the light off the cross. This building also emphasizes on the harmonious mixture of modernism sense of minimalism to the Christian value of simplicity.

How does it reflect your values and characters?

The Open House by Rosario Talevi, is a house that represents me the most. from the outer surface of house is simple yet elegant, with its wooden walls which blends it nicely with the glass window panel that shows the relationship between nature and industrialization. The minimal design of the structure shows correlation between the structure and its surrounding environment, a calm, warm and peaceful exterior which enclose ones emotions and feeling inside. The building itself shows that I am opening up myself and experience new things that enables me to find my own identity and purpose in life.

In which it related to my personality, begin fluidity and able to compromise in any situations more like a openminded person. Another way to explain this is that I tend to follow the flow of my emotion.

The building itself is support by the curve skeletal structure so the interior is column free, it gives a sense of unobstructed, a very simple and straight person. Besides that, the surroundings environment is very calm and peaceful without any existing structures, at least inside a 10m radius. The hill, greenery give a very clam environment also there is a pool surrounding part of the structure, simply a very peaceful scenery reflection the inside of myself.

Name: Ng Ee Shiung
Student ID: 0314228

The building I have chosen is the Lotus Temple located in New Delhi, India. This temple serves as the main headquarters of the Baha’i faith in the Indian subcontinent. The building’s shape resembles a lotus with 27 marble-clad “petals” to form 9 sides of the façade. There are entrances located surrounding the building to allow circulation from all sides. The Baha’i faith rules that there are no sermons, musicals or ritualistic ceremonies practiced in the temple to allow visitors to connect with their faith in the purest form. The purity of the temple is demonstrated by the abundance of white colour and minimal artistic depictions of religion. The temple is open to all visitors regardless of their own beliefs. The architecture of the building creates divinity with light shining down the mass hall through ceiling window with a symbol of “The Greatest Name”, the Baha’i worshippers’ belief of God. The architecture of this building shows the modesty and humbleness of the religion it represents.

(How does it relates to your character and values?)
